Spotted! Cover of Indelible by Dawn Metcalf

The cover for Dawn Metcalf's Indelible, the first novel in The Twixt series, was revealed yesterday afternoon on Harlequin Teen's Facebook page!

Release Date: July 30, 2013
Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Summary (from Goodreads):
Joy doesn’t know who “Ink” is, but she suspects it might be the guy who tried to stab her in the eye. Ever since that night at the club, Joy keeps finding cryptic notes, messages, and threats for Ink. Trying to disentangle herself from this bizarre case of mistaken identity, Joy discovers the truth about the mysterious Indelible Ink and other members of the Twixt, unexpectedly pitting them both against a world of monsters, illusion, immortal honor and revenge, and a scheme to end the Age of Man.

I hadn't heard of Indelible until I saw Harlequin Teen's official cover reveal on their Facebook page yesterday, but I'm definitely curious to learn more about Dawn Metcalf's novel now! I absolutely love its gorgeous cover! I'm wondering if the glowing (burning?) orange-red rose will have some significance in Indelible, and I like how it's surrounded by darkness. And everyone knows I simply cannot resist a premise which promises to be thrilling and mysterious, and involve paranormal events!

What are your thoughts on the cover for Dawn Metcalf's Indelible? Are you excited to read the book?

Summary (from Goodreads):
Anna Whitt, the daughter of a guardian angel and a demon, promised herself she’d never do the work of her father—polluting souls. She’d been naive to make such a vow. She’d been naive about a lot of things.

Haunted by demon whisperers, Anna does whatever she can to survive, even if it means embracing her dark side and earning an unwanted reputation as her school’s party girl. Her life has never looked more bleak. And all the while there’s Kaidan Rowe, son of the Duke of Lust, plaguing her heart and mind.

When an unexpected lost message from the angels surfaces, Anna finds herself traveling the globe with Kopano, son of Wrath, in an attempt to gain support of fellow Nephilim and give them hope for the first time. It soon becomes clear that whatever freedoms Anna and the rest of the Neph are hoping to win will not be gained without a fight. Until then, Anna and Kaidan must put aside the issues between them, overcome the steamiest of temptations yet, and face the ultimate question: is loving someone worth risking their life?

For my last WoW pick of the year, I decided to choose one of my most anticipated reads of 2013. I absolutely cannot wait to get my hands on a copy of Wendy Higgins's Sweet Peril and find out what will happen to Anna and Kai and the rest of the Nephilim in the next book in the Sweet Evil trilogy. After reading Sweet Evil, my heart ached to see Anna and Kai be separated, and it sounds like there's even more danger and tension to come in book two! I'm also beginning to feel the effects of Kai withdrawal... so I'm hoping we get a good dosage of him in Sweet Peril!

Book Trailer! - The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

The book trailer for Alexandra Bracken's The Darkest Minds, the first novel in a suspenseful new trilogy, was revealed on EW's Shelf Life last week, but it has also recently popped up on Hyperion Teen's YouTube channel too!

I haven't had a chance to write my review for The Darkest Minds yet but when it's posted, it's only going to be filled with words of praise for the book! The novel may be 500 pages long, but I read it in one sitting because it was just too good to put down. It combines science fiction and post-apocalyptic elements to deliver one very awesome thriller. I would highly recommend picking up a copy to read this holiday season!

Enjoy the book trailer!

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. Now she’s on the run, desperate to find the one safe haven left for kids like her—East River. Release Date: May 7, 2013

Summary (from Goodreads):
From #1 New York Times bestselling author Meg Cabot, the dark reimagining of the Persephone myth comes to a thrilling conclusion.

Death has her in his clutches. She doesn’t want him to let go.

Seventeen-year-old Pierce Oliviera knew by accepting the love of John Hayden, she’d be forced to live forever in the one place she’s always dreaded most: the Underworld. The sacrifice seemed worth it, though, because it meant she could be with the boy she loves.

But now her happiness — and safety — are threatened, all because the Furies have discovered that John has broken one of their strictest rules: He revived a human soul.

If the balance between life and death isn’t fixed, both the Underworld and Pierce’s home back on earth will be wiped away. But there’s only one way to restore order. Someone has to die.

After the exciting conclusion in Underworld, I simply cannot wait to see how Meg Cabot will end the Abandon Trilogy when the final novel, Awaken, is released in May 2013! With all the secrets and the terrifying danger the Furies pose, Pierce and John have gone through so much together... but will they get their happily ever after?

Also, the book covers for the Abandon Trilogy are all gorgeous, but the one for Awaken may just be my favourite of them all! I cannot wait to have a copy of the novel sitting on my bookshelf!

Spotted! Cover for Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay

Stacey Jay revealed the book cover for her upcoming 2013 novel, Of Beast and Beauty, yesterday evening on her blog! She's also posted a short teaser from the book in her post as well!

 Release Date: July 23, 2013
Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers

Summary (from Goodreads):
In the beginning was the darkness, and in the darkness was a girl, and in the girl was a secret...

In the domed city of Yuan, the blind Princess Isra, a Smooth Skin, is raised to be a human sacrifice whose death will ensure her city's vitality. In the desert outside Yuan, Gem, a mutant beast, fights to save his people, the Monstrous, from starvation. Neither dreams that together, they could return balance to both their worlds.

Isra wants to help the city's Banished people, second-class citizens despised for possessing Monstrous traits. But after she enlists the aid of her prisoner, Gem, who has been captured while trying to steal Yuan's enchanted roses, she begins to care for him, and to question everything she has been brought up to believe.

As secrets are revealed and Isra's sight, which vanished during her childhood, returned, Isra will have to choose between duty to her people and the beast she has come to love.

As you can probably guess from the title, Of Beast and Beauty is a reimagining of Beauty and the Beast! I really love reading Stacey Jay's YA novels, and judging from the premise of this one, Of Beast and Beauty sounds really different from her previous books. I cannot wait to see what kind of spin she brings to one of my favourite fairy tales!

What are your thoughts on the cover? I love how it's dark and grainy, with a certain understated elegance to it. The red rose with the petals dropping below adds a perfect touch!

The Friday Society Blog Tour! Review: The Friday Society by Adrienne Kress

Title: The Friday Society
Author: Adrienne Kress
Release Date: June 11, 2012 (hardcover)
Publisher: Dial
Pages: 448
Source: ARC provided by publisher

Overall: 5 Stars

Summary:
An action-packed tale of gowns, guys, guns–and the heroines who use them all

Set in turn of the century London, The Friday Society follows the stories of three very intelligent and talented young women, all of whom are assistants to powerful men: Cora, lab assistant; Michiko, Japanese fight assistant; and Nellie, magician's assistant. The three young women's lives become inexorably intertwined after a chance meeting at a ball that ends with the discovery of a murdered mystery man.

It's up to these three, in their own charming but bold way, to solve the murder–and the crimes they believe may be connected to it–without calling too much attention to themselves.

Set in the past but with a modern irreverent flare, this Steampunk whodunit introduces three unforgettable and very ladylike–well, relatively ladylike–heroines poised for more dangerous adventures.

My Thoughts:
Adrienne Kress' debut YA novel, The Friday Society, is a steampunk adventure you don't want to miss! It was a fun and entertaining read from beginning to end. There's a touch of romance in the novel, but it really wasn't the central focus of the storyline. I loved its emphasis on friendship, teamwork, and the empowering of women.

There's definitely a feminist edge to The Friday Society. Nellie, Cora, and Michiko are strong heroines in their own rights, but many men would dismiss them as pretty faces and girls to be protected. It's a foolish notion on their part, and these three young women were all too ready to prove just how mistaken these men could be in underestimating their abilities and intellect.

Nellie is a magician's assistant, skilled at picking locks and acrobatics, and capable of unbinding herself from the trickiest of knots. Cora is a lab assistant working for the influential Lord White, whose secret hobby is creating mechanical inventions. She shares his passion for inventing and is always open to tackling a new challenge.

Originally from Japan, Michiko ran away from home and persistently worked hard to learn the forbidden ways of a samurai. She later accepted an offer to become a fight assistant in London, a decision she now regrets because she longs to be free and a true warrior. There's a nefarious plot afoot in the city and it will take the inquisitive minds of Cora, Nellie, and Michiko to discover the villain.

While The Friday Society is a standalone novel for now, I can definitely see the potential for a sequel! I have my fingers-crossed that I'll be seeing Cora, Nellie, and Michiko solving another mystery together!

Thanks so much to Penguin Canada for providing this review copy and organizing the Canadian blog tour for The Friday Society!

Book Trailer! - Prophecy by Ellen Oh

Ellen Oh unveiled the book trailer for her debut novel Prophecy, the first novel in The Dragon King Chronicles, on her blog a couple days ago!

I'm so excited to read Prophecy! Not only is the book within the high fantasy genre, but the setting is also inspired by ancient Korea! There is definitely not enough YA books with an Asian influence, so I'm thrilled that Prophecy is helping to fill the void.

I love the animation for this book trailer! Enjoy.

Falling Kingdoms Blog Tour! Review: Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes

Title: Falling Kingdoms (Falling Kingdoms #1)
Author: Morgan Rhodes (pseudonym of Michelle Rowen)
Release Date: December 11, 2012 (hardcover)
Publisher: Razorbill
Pages: 400
Source: ARC provided by publisher

Overall: 5 Stars

Summary:
In a land where magic has been forgotten but peace has reigned for centuries, a deadly unrest is simmering. Three kingdoms grapple for power--brutally transforming their subjects' lives in the process. Amidst betrayals, bargains, and battles, four young people find their fates forever intertwined:

Cleo: A princess raised in luxury must embark on a rough and treacherous journey into enemy territory in search of a magic long thought extinct.

Jonas: Enraged at injustice, a rebel lashes out against the forces of oppression that have kept his country impoverished--and finds himself the leader of a people's revolution centuries in the making.

Lucia: A girl adopted at birth into a royal family discovers the truth about her past--and the supernatural legacy she is destined to wield.

Magnus: Bred for aggression and trained to conquer, a firstborn son begins to realize that the heart can be more lethal than the sword...

The only outcome that's certain is that kingdoms will fall. Who will emerge triumphant when all they know has collapsed?

My Thoughts:
Falling Kingdoms was easily one of my most anticipated reads of the year, so I was absolutely thrilled that it completely lived up to my high expectations! I was completely captivated by Morgan Rhodes's words on every single page. In a land where the powerful are all too eager to betray and manipulate their enemies, who can be trusted? Kingdoms will fall and no one is safe from death.

Morgan Rhodes has put great effort into envisioning three very different kingdoms which have their own histories and deities their people believe in. While the novel is mainly told through the perspectives of the four main characters Cleo, Jonas, Magnus, and Lucia, I never felt confused by the style of narration. Cleo, Jonas, Magnus, and Lucia each have distinctive personalities, and it was interesting to discover how their lives were so intertwined.

Cleo is a princess of the wealthy kingdom Auranos who doesn't understand the hardships that many others face. Her life of luxury is taken for granted, and she's used to getting away with whatever she wants. Jonas is completely unlike Cleo. He's is a poor wine seller's son, and when his brother is brutally murdered in unfair justification, his anger and thirst for revenge lead him on a path which will change Paelsia, his impoverished kingdom.

Magnus is heir to the throne of Limeros, and while many may fear him, the only person in the world he truly cares about is his younger sister Lucia. He was raised to be a cold-hearted conquerer like his father, King Gaius, who uses strict laws and a strong military presence to rule. Lucia was secretly adopted into the royal family with no idea that her awakening magical abilities, which have just begun to come into power since she's turned sixteen, are connected to a destiny she will soon need to face. I grew immensely attached to these characters as I read along, but I also worried about what fate had in store for them, a feeling which left me anxiously turning the pages.

I loved every moment of Falling Kingdoms and cannot wait to see what will happen next in the second novel, Rebel Spring! The tenuous peace and building political turmoil among the neighbouring kingdoms made Falling Kingdoms such a compelling read. Morgan Rhodes's debut is a fantastic, action-filled start to the Falling Kingdoms series and I would recommend the book to any fan of the high fantasy genre in a heartbeat.

Thanks so much to Penguin Canada for providing this review copy and organizing the Canadian blog tour!

It’s their chance to change the nation, to give voice to a people silenced for too long.

But as June realizes this Elector is nothing like his father, she’s haunted by the choice ahead. What if Anden is a new beginning? What if revolution must be more than loss and vengeance, anger and blood—what if the Patriots are wrong?

Summary (from Goodreads):
I looked down at the paper, still touching the tip of my shoe. I reached for it, flipping the page over to look.

Scrawls of ink outlined a drawing of a girl lying on a bench.

A sick feeling started to twist in my stomach, like motion sickness.

And then the girl in the drawing turned her head, and her inky eyes glared straight into mine.

On the heels of a family tragedy, the last thing Katie Greene wants to do is move halfway across the world. Stuck with her aunt in Shizuoka, Japan, Katie feels lost. Alone. She doesn’t know the language, she can barely hold a pair of chopsticks, and she can’t seem to get the hang of taking her shoes off whenever she enters a building.

Then there’s gorgeous but aloof Tomohiro, star of the school’s kendo team. How did he really get the scar on his arm? Katie isn’t prepared for the answer. But when she sees the things he draws start moving, there’s no denying the truth: Tomo has a connection to the ancient gods of Japan, and being near Katie is causing his abilities to spiral out of control. If the wrong people notice, they'll both be targets.

Katie never wanted to move to Japan—now she may not make it out of the country alive.

I honestly added Ink to my must-read list after the mere mention that it was set in Japan! The first novel in The Paper Gods series by Canadian author Amanda Sun, Ink appears to be a promising debut! I'm always eager to get my hands on new paranormal novels, but what makes this one all the more thrilling is how it's influenced by Japanese mythology. And I have it on good authority that there are a lot of hot Japanese boys featured in it. I seriously cannot wait for Ink

The Almost Truth Blog Tour! Author Interview with... Eileen Cook!

I'm very excited to be taking part today in the blog tour for Canadian author Eileen Cook's latest YA novel, The Almost Truth, which was just released in bookstores earlier this week!

If you're a fan of the YA contemporary genre, then you simply must get your hands on a copy of this book! The Almost Truth is my favourite novel by Eileen Cook yet.

Thanks to Simon & Schuster Canada, I was able to ask Eileen Cook a few questions about The Almost Truth...

From the author of Unraveling Isobel and The Education of Hailey Kendrick, a smart, romantic novel about a teenage con artist who might be in over her head.

Sadie can’t wait to get away from her backwards small town, her delusional mom, her jailbird dad, and the tiny trailer where she was raised…even though leaving those things behind also means leaving Brendan. Sadie wants a better life, and she has been working steadily toward it, one con at a time.

But when Sadie’s mother wipes out Sadie’s savings, her escape plan is suddenly gone. She needs to come up with a lot of cash—and fast—or she’ll be stuck in this town forever.

With Brendan’s help, she devises a plan—the ultimate con—to get the money. But the more lies Sadie spins, the more she starts falling for her own hoax…and perhaps for the wrong boy. Sadie wanted to change her life, but she wasn't prepared to have it flipped upside down by her own deception. With her future at stake and her heart on the line, suddenly it seems like she has a lot more than just money to lose....

1) In The Almost Truth, Sadie is a young con artist who needs to quickly recover the money her mother wiped from her bank account that should have been the key to leaving her trailer park life behind. If you took a page out of Sadie's books, but didn't have to worry about the consequences, what kind of con or "almost truth" would you try to pull off?

I'd love to pull off a con where I convinced people I could dance. I have to be the person with the least amount of rhythm ever. In any sort of fitness class I'm always the person going to the left instead of the right. I'm not sure that's a con as much as a total fantasy. If I could pull off a more realistic con, I would convince people whenever I fly that I was actually supposed to be in first class. I've flown in coach and I've flown in first class, and first class is WAY better. I'm pretty sure it's illegal to lie to airport people- but it would almost be worth it.

2) Who were you favourite characters to write about in The Almost Truth?

This is a hard question because I tend to fall in love with a lot of my characters. My two favourites with this book were Sadie and Brendan. They have a lot in common, they might be described as having questionable morals in some areas, but they are both fiercely loyal to their friends and have a strict sense of what they see as right and wrong. I admire people who are willing to go after what they want full speed ahead.

3) From tales of revenge to a classic coming-of-age story, what is it about the contemporary genre that inspires your always highly enjoyable YA novels?

Thank you! I love reading and writing contemporary YA. It's possible I have a lot of unresolved issues from high school, but when I sit down to write I tend to think in terms of issues that feel familiar to me, friendships, family, falling in love, and all the things that can wrong. When I look back at my books I can see that I tend to tackle the question, Who am I? Sorting out who you want to be is one of the biggest challenges that everyone faces- heck, some people are still trying to figure it out. Growing up I spent a lot of time (way too much time) worrying about other people thought. My life turned around when I started to focus on impressing myself instead of others.

*****

Thanks so much to Eileen Cook for answering my questions about The Almost Truth! I already can't wait to read her next YA novel! If you'd like to learn more The Almost Truth, you can visit Eileen Cook's website, follow her on Twitter, or friend her on Facebook.

Have YOU ever told an "almost truth" and then had it totally backfire?

Summary (from Goodreads):
Being a 16-year-old safecracker and active-duty daughter of international spies has its moments, good and bad. Pros: Seeing the world one crime-solving adventure at a time. Having parents with super cool jobs. Cons: Never staying in one place long enough to have friends or a boyfriend. But for Maggie Silver, the biggest perk of all has been avoiding high school and the accompanying cliques, bad lunches, and frustratingly simple locker combinations. Then Maggie and her parents are sent to New York for her first solo assignment, and all of that changes. She'll need to attend a private school, avoid the temptation to hack the school's security system, and befriend one aggravatingly cute Jesse Oliver to gain the essential information she needs to crack the case . . . all while trying not to blow her cover.

I literally stumbled across Robin Benway's upcoming novel, Also Known As, only yesterday and as soon as I read the book description, I instantly added it to my must-read list and just had to feature it as my WoW pick this week! A teenage safecracker with spies as parents and who's now about to set out on her own solo assignment? It sounds so awesome and fun! I need this book. Like. Right. Now.

Love and Other Perishable Items by Laura Buzo

Title: Love and Other Perishable Items
Author: Laura Buzo
Release Date: December 11, 2012 (hardcover)
Publisher: Knopf Books for Young Readers
Pages: 256
Source: Copy provided by publisher

Overall: 3.5 Stars

Summary:
Love is awkward, Amelia should know.

From the moment she sets eyes on Chris, she is a goner. Lost. Sunk. Head over heels infatuated with him. It's problematic, since Chris, 21, is a sophisticated university student, while Amelia, 15, is 15.

Amelia isn't stupid. She knows it's not gonna happen. So she plays it cool around Chris—at least, as cool as she can. Working checkout together at the local supermarket, they strike up a friendship: swapping life stories, bantering about everything from classic books to B movies, and cataloging the many injustices of growing up. As time goes on, Amelia's crush doesn't seem so one-sided anymore. But if Chris likes her back, what then? Can two people in such different places in life really be together?

Through a year of befuddling firsts—first love, first job, first party, and first hangover—debut author Laura Buzo shows how the things that break your heart can still crack you up.

My Thoughts:
Laura Buzo's debut novel, Love and Other Perishable Items, is filled with pages of quirkiness and Australian charm. It was not the contemporary romance novel I had been initially expecting, but I still enjoyed every moment of reading Love and Other Perishable Items!

Amelia is fifteen and Chris is twenty-one. When Amelia gets a job at a Coles supermarket, which Chris jokingly refers to as the Land of Dreams, he takes her under his wing and trains her how to serve customers. Despite the age difference, they are open and honest to each other, and soon enough, become unlikely friends. The novel is told from dual perspectives, with Amelia's point of view in first person and Chris's narration in the form of journal entries. And wow, did they ever have differing perspectives!

Amelia's thoughts are consumed by her hopeless crush on Chris, her parent's seemingly unhappy marriage, and the frustrating book characters in the classic English novels she must read for class. She's an avid reader who bonds with Chris over her reactions of the novels, and isn't afraid to speak what is on her mind... well, almost everything. As Chris flirts with their coworkers, she pretends she only likes him on a friends-only level.

While Amelia may look up to Chris as someone who is sophisticated and wise, when you see events from his perspective, there is quite a contrast. Chris feels very lost and unsure of himself, and like most university students, he hates answering questions about his future after school. His friends may be moving on with their lives, but he's in a form of stasis working at the Land of Dreams. He often drinks a lot with their misfit coworkers, but it's with Amelia that he has real conversations.

It was almost comical how much Amelia thinks of Chris, and how little he seems to notice her in his journal entries. Based on the six-year age gap, they simply have different real-world concerns to worry about. So while the ending may seem bittersweet to some readers, I thought it was realistic and made perfect sense. With themes which both teens and adults alike can relate to, Laura Buzo's Love and Other Perishable Items is definitely more than just a cute contemporary read!

Thanks so much to Random House Canada for providing this review copy!
