Waiting on Wednesday (112) - Perfect Scoundrels by Ally Carter

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Release Date: February 5, 2013
Publisher: Hyperion Books for Children

Summary (from Goodreads):
Katarina Bishop and W.W. Hale the fifth were born to lead completely different lives: Kat comes from a long, proud line of loveable criminal masterminds, while Hale is the scion of one of the most seemingly perfect dynasties in the world. If their families have one thing in common, it’s that they both know how to stay under the radar while getting—or stealing—whatever they want.

No matter the risk, the Bishops can always be counted on, but in Hale’s family, all bets are off when money is on the line. When Hale unexpectedly inherits his grandmother’s billion dollar corporation, he quickly learns that there’s no place for Kat and their old heists in his new role. But Kat won’t let him go that easily, especially after she gets tipped off that his grandmother’s will might have been altered in an elaborate con to steal the company’s fortune. So instead of being the heir—this time, Hale might be the mark.

Forced to keep a level head as she and her crew fight for one of their own, Kat comes up with an ambitious and far-reaching plan that only the Bishop family would dare attempt. To pull it off, Kat is prepared to do the impossible, but first, she has to decide if she’s willing to save her boyfriend’s company if it means losing the boy.

Ally Carter is definitely one of my favourite authors, and the wait for Perfect Scoundrels has felt like a long one. Her books are always fun and fresh, with a unique premise you'll be hard-pressed to find anything remotely similar in book stores. I recently re-read the first two books in the Heist Society series, Heist Society and Uncommon Criminals, and I'm sure I'll be doing so again as the release date steadily creeps closer. I never tire of reading Ally Carter's books again and again!

With Hale having to focus on his family's company, I think Kat and her crew will be kicking it old school without the help of Hale's money this time around. I'm sure she'll come up with some crazy plans to help Hale out, and I can't wait to read all about it!

Book Trailer! - Venom by Fiona Paul

The first novel in the Secrets of Eternal Rose series, both the trailer and book description for Venom have just enough danger, intrigue and romance to leave me wanting more! And I just love the Venetian mask featured on the cover too!

Waiting on Wednesday (111) - The Indigo Spell by Richelle Mead

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Release Date: February 12, 2013
Publisher: Razorbill

Summary (from Penguin USA):
Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets—and human lives.

In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch--a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood--or else she might be next.

It's novels like Richelle Mead's The Indigo Spell which make me wish I could control time so I can fast forward to when the book will hit shelves! Just like the Vampire Academy novels, I'm obsessed with the Bloodlines series and will happily fan-girl about the novels. I'm so glad Sydney is finally opening up to the thought of using magic, and I love how we're continuing to dig deeper into the Alchemist world. And, of course, I need more ADRIAN!

In case you haven't given into the temptation yet, you can read the first chapter of The Indigo Spell on Richelle Mead's website or a more prettily formatted Scribd version posted by Penguin USA. It will leave you desperately wishing you can read more of the book!

Book Trailer! - Carnival of Souls by Melissa Marr

The book trailer for Carnival of Souls, the first novel in a brand new series by Melissa Marr, was unveiled last week on EW's Shelf Life! I still haven't read any novels by Melissa Marr, but I really like the premise for Carnival of Souls, so I'm really eager to get my hands on a copy and read it! (I'm still on the fence about the cover though... Maybe it will look better in person?)

Enjoy the book trailer! The publisher has given it a very theatrical touch that is sure to catch your interest, even if you're not already looking forward to hearing more about Carnival of Souls.

Summary (from HarperTeen):
In a city of daimons, rigid class lines separate the powerful from the power-hungry. And at the heart of The City is the Carnival of Souls, where both murder and pleasure are offered up for sale. Once in a generation, the carnival hosts a deadly competition that allows every daimon a chance to join the ruling elite. Without the competition, Aya and Kaleb would both face bleak futures—if for different reasons. For each of them, fighting to the death is the only way to try to live.

All Mallory knows of The City is that her father—and every other witch there—fled it for a life in exile in the human world. Instead of a typical teenage life full of friends and maybe even a little romance, Mallory scans quiet streets for threats, hides herself away, and trains to be lethal. She knows it's only a matter of time until a daimon finds her and her father, so she readies herself for the inevitable. While Mallory possesses little knowledge of The City, every inhabitant of The City knows of her. There are plans for Mallory, and soon she, too, will be drawn into the decadence and danger that is the Carnival of Souls.

From Melissa Marr, bestselling author of the Wicked Lovely series and Graveminder, comes a brand-new tale of lush secrets, dark love, and the struggle to forge one's own destiny.

Stacking the Shelves (7)

Stacking the Shelves is a weekly meme hosted by fellow Canadian blogger Tynga at Tynga's Reviews where we share any new books or goodies we bought, received, borrowed, etc. during the week.

This week, I got...

Received for Review:

Thanks so much to Bookurious, Raincoast Books, Random House Canada and Tundra Books for sending these books for review! With the exception of Girl of Nightmares and Red Heart Tattoo, everything else was a complete surprise to find in my mailbox!

Are you a Canadian teen and/or avid reader who doesn't mind writing a book review? Every month, members of the Blog It Forward group on Bookurious, the Canadian counterpart to Random Buzzers in the U.S., receive a featured book and all you have to do is read it and then post a review with your thoughts on their site within the month. Simple, right? You can read more details about it on the site.

This month's book is Lurlene McDaniel's Red Heart Tattoo and after reading its description, I'm already wondering if my heart will be emotionally prepared to read it...

Also, if you notice that I'm quiet on Twitter or the blog, it's because I'm away on vacation to Turkey! By the time this post goes up, I will already be out of the country. I leave August 18 and I won't be back until September 2, and I'm really excited to experience such a different culture and see new sights. It should be fun, and hopefully everything will go according to plan on the tour.

I've tried to schedule some posts for while I'm away, but I'll have to catch up on reviews and returning comments when I get back. I hope some of the hotels I'll be staying at will have free Wi-Fi I can use, or I'll be in complete internet withdrawal...

What about YOU? Any new reads/finds this week?

And as always... Happy Reading!

Blogger Luncheon with Billie Livingston & Giveaway for "One Good Hustle"!

Earlier in the month, on August 8, I was invited by Random House Canada to attend a Blogger Luncheon with author Billie Livingston as the special guest of honour! A very small group of book bloggers, plus Adria and Lindsey from RHC, met up with the Canadian author at a restaurant called Cheesewerks in downtown Toronto where we all comfortably chatted while eating amazing specialty grilled cheeses. (Seriously, I think it's the best grilled cheese I've ever had!) It was a very casual, yet intimate, event as we discussed Billie Livingston's latest novel One Good Hustle!

During the luncheon, we covered everything from our favourite characters in One Good Hustle (it was fun to see Lindsey fan-girling about Sammie!), whether we've ever been conned in our own lives (the parents of the main character, Sammie, are con artists as a living), to high school memories and learning more about Billie Livingston's next writing projects. We also debated how to categorize One Good Hustle as being YA or Adult fiction, with the conclusion that it could be defined as either. While the book is technically Adult, the younger aged protagonist and themes in the book certainly showed that it holds a YA appeal as well.

I think one of the most interesting pieces of information I learned that day was how One Good Hustle was inspired, in part, by Billie Livingston's own life. There's a very great article where you can read all about it on the Globe and Mail's website, but in short, Sammie and Billie are much more alike than readers may have first imagined as Billie's father was also a con artist. Many of us were so surprised when we learned this! We also learned when Billie Livingston is not writing or doing research for her next novel, she also works as an "extra" in the film industry back home in Vancouver, which I thought was really cool!

When we were all finished eating, we took a group photo of the bloggers present along with Billie Livingston, and also got our own copies signed and personalized.

It was such a pleasure to meet the very kind and friendly Billie Livingston, and the time seemed to fly by in no time at all! Thanks so much to Random House Canada for organizing the lunch, and extending an invitation to me.

You can also read another recap of the Blogger Luncheon with Billie Livingston on Random House Canada's new Retreat blog!

From award-winning writer Billie Livingston, an unsparing novel of loyalty and survival that is fierce, sharp and funny even when it's breaking your heart.

The child of 2 con artists, 16-year-old Sammie Bell always prided herself on knowing the score. But now she finds herself backed into a corner. After a hustle gone dangerously wrong, her mother, Marlene, is sliding into an abyss of alcoholic depression, spending her days fantasizing aloud about death--a goal Sammie is tempted to help her accomplish. Horrified by the appeal of this, Sammie packs a bag and leaves her mother to her own devices.

With her father missing in action, she has nowhere else to go but the home of a friend with 2 parents who seem to actually love their daughter and each other--and who awkwardly try to extend some semblance of family to Sammie. Throughout a long summer of crisis among the normals, Sammie is torn between her longing for the approval of the con-man father she was named for and her desire for the "weird, spearmint-fresh feeling" of life in the straight world. Sammie wants to be normal but fears that where she comes from makes that beyond the realm of possibility.

One Good Hustle chronicles 2 months in Sammie Bell's struggle with her dread that she is somehow doomed genetically to be just another hustler.

Spotted! Cover of Nobody by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Jennifer Lynn Barnes revealed the book cover and plot summary of her latest YA novel, Nobody, yesterday on her Tumblr blog!

Release Date: January 22, 2013
Publisher: EgmontUSA

Summary (from author's website):
The most dangerous people in the world…are the ones you don’t even see.

Some people are Nobodies: ignored, unloved, practically invisible in every way. No one notices them. No one cares about them. They exist under the radar, forgotten as soon as you turn away.

No one sees them coming. No one sees them leave.

That’s why Nobodies make the perfect assassins.

Seventeen-year-old Nix is very good at his job. So when the organization he works for sends him after a teenage girl named Claire, he doesn’t ask questions. He’s a killer. She needs to die.

For sixteen years, Claire has led a normal life being overlooked. Her parents are absent. She doesn’t have any friends. She has no idea what she is, or why anyone would want her dead. But she’s about to find out, because from the moment Nix attempts to carry out his mission, the two are caught up in a conspiracy of murder, cover-ups, and betrayal.

Nix is a killer. Claire is his target. But from the moment he sets eyes on her, everything changes, because only the two of them can truly see each other—and two Nobodies are more than twice as dangerous as one.

It's such a coincidence, but for quite some time now, I've been thinking there needs to be a YA novel featuring teenage assassins working for secret organizations... Needless to say, as soon as I heard about Jennifer Lynn Barnes's upcoming book, Nobody, I instantly began to consider it as a MUST-HAVE! It sounds crazy awesome and I can't wait to read it.

What are your thoughts on the book cover? Given the book's summary, I think it makes total sense to have what appears to be some sort of sniper scope focusing on the silhouette of a girl. And I like how the book's title is in a lager font size; it should catch a reader's eye more easily!

Spotted! Cover of Wicked Kiss by Michelle Rowen

Harlequin Teen revealed the book cover for Michelle Rowen's Wicked Kiss, the second novel in the Nightwatchers series, earlier today on their Facebook page!

 Release Date: February 26, 2013
Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Summary (from Goodreads):
MY KISS CAN KILL.

I used to be ordinary Samantha Day, but that's changed. Now, after one dark kiss from a dangerous boy, I can steal someone's soul...or their life. If I give in to the constant hunger inside me, I hurt anyone I kiss. If I don't...I hurt myself.

Bishop is the one whose kiss I crave most, but if I kiss him, I'll kill him. Then there's another boy, one I can't hurt. One whose kiss seems to miraculously quell my hunger. They're both part of a team of angels and demons that's joined forces in my city to fight a mysterious rising darkness, an evil that threatens everyone I know and love. I just wonder if I'll be able to help Bishop-or if I'm just another part of the darkness he's sworn to destroy....

NIGHTWATCHERS

When angels and demons must work together, something beyond evil is rising...

I really enjoyed reading Dark Kiss, the first book in the Nightwatchers series, a couple months ago and I'll be impatiently waiting to see what happens next in Wicked Kiss! Michelle Rowen had a unique take on angels and demons, and after a couple twists in the first book, I can't wait to see what direction she'll take the series.

While Bishop seemed to be the main love interest for Samantha, I was totally crushing on Kraven the entire time instead, so I'm really hoping we'll see more of him in Wicked Kiss! I really do love his character a lot more.

What are your thoughts on the book cover? The magenta colour is super pretty and I like how the cover theme is similar to the one for Dark Kiss!

Spotted! Cover of The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler

Sarah Ockler revealed the cover of her upcoming YA novel, The Book of Broken Hearts, a couple days ago on her Facebook page!

Release Date: May 21, 2013
Publisher: Simon Pulse

There's no official summary to be found just yet for The Book of Broken Hearts, but just the fact that it's written by Sarah Ockler is enough to make this novel an absolute must-have! I loved reading Sarah Ockler's previous three contemporary novels, Twenty Boy Summer, Fixing Delilah and Bittersweet, and I'm sure I'll be feeling the same way about this one too.

What do you think about the book cover? Much like her other covers, I think this one is really cute, pretty and soft on the eyes!

Waiting on Wednesday (110) - Altered by Jennifer Rush

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Release Date: January 2, 2013
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers

Summary (from Goodreads):
When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.

Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.

Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

Doesn't Jennifer Rush's debut novel Altered sound absolutely thrilling and suspenseful? I sure think so! I've been keeping an eye on this book for quite awhile now, and time seems to be crawling by for its release date. I'm curious about the Branch's mission and what plans they have in store for the boys, and why Anna's father is so adamant that she run away with Sam while she still can. I can't wait to get my hands on Altered and read it right away!

Review & Author Interview: This Is Not A Test by Courtney Summers

Title: This Is Not A Test
Author: Courtney Summers
Release Date: June 19, 2012 (paperback)
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
Pages: 336
Source: Copy Provided by St. Martin's Press (thank you!)

Overall: 4.5 Stars

Summary:
It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self.

To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up. As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live.

But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life—and death—inside.

When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?

My Thoughts:
This Is Not A Test may be a slight departure from the contemporary novels which Courtney Summers usually writes, but it didn't deter from delivering a strong character-driven storyline. It explores human nature in the darkest of times and the difficult choices to be made in order to survive. This Is Not A Test is a post-apocalyptic novel unlike anything I've ever read before, with a theatrical touch that's easy to visualize but also brings out powerful feelings that settle in your chest.

As humanity descends into madness and zombies pound against the barricades hastily thrown up at Cortege High, six students take refuge inside and wait in isolation from the rest of the world. Wait for hope. Wait for rescue. Wait for death to come and finally take them all. Sloane Price gave up trying to live several months ago, after her older sister, Lily, suddenly ran away from home. Now Sloane's struggling to simply exist in the present and find a reason to keep holding on.

Everyone would like to think if they faced a life-or-death situation, they would act morally and bravely until the very end, but when it actually happens, that's a whole other matter. And that's what I really liked about This Is Not A Test; the actions and mindsets of the characters are very believable. My heart completely went out to Sloane. Similar to Courtney Summers's previous protagonists, she's a depressed young woman, one of those lost souls you want to wrap your arms around in comfort and banish her dark thoughts.

Every page of the novel is emotionally-charged, and there's a delicate tension that threatens to snap as readers wait for the inevitable moment when something will go horribly wrong. This Is Not A Test is one of Courtney Summers's best novels yet, which is really saying something because I've loved all of her previous books! I cannot wait to see what she'll have in store for us next!

*****
Thanks to Raincoast Books, I was also able to ask Courtney Summers a few questions about This Is Not A Test and her other novels! Without further ado, here's my Q&A with the Canadian author:

1) Who was your favourite character to write about in This Is Not A Test?

Sloane was--it'd would have been really difficult to write from her perspective if she hadn't been. But after Sloane, definitely Trace. He was so outspoken and awful but also very vulnerable. I loved writing him!

2) Your previous novels, Cracked Up to Be, Some Girls Are and Fall For Anything, have all been within the contemporary YA genre. What inspired you to write about an impending zombie apocalypse this time around?

I've always known that I'd write a zombie novel, because I've always loved zombies--it was just a matter of when. After finishing Fall for Anything, it felt to me like it was time to mix it up a little.

3) Was there a deleted scene from This Is Not A Test that you wish had made it into the final version?

Not really! I've been trying to think if there's one, but most of my deleted scenes are deleted for a reason--they are disasters I can't in good conscience inflict on people. There were two other characters--Sabrina and Will--that didn't make it into the final version. I gave all of Sabrina's character traits to Grace and some of Will's to Harrison. I'm glad they stayed out of it though. They slowed down the book.

4) I'm always anticipating what kind of pain you'll rain down on your characters in a completely heart-wrenching scene. Was there ever a time when you were writing a particularly difficult scene in one of your novels that just had to walk away from it for awhile?

That's a great question. I've never been one of those writers who has to step back from the pain I'm causing my characters, no matter how awful or traumatic it is. That said, the scene in Some Girls Are--where they lock Regina in the supply closet with Donnie--was tough. It was essential, but hard to include in the book. I believed those characters would do that to Regina (I still do) but it's disturbing.

5) Can you share with us what you're working on next for readers to enjoy?

Right now I'm working on my fifth book, ALL THE RAGE. It's coming out in 2013 from St. Martin's Press and it's about a girl who wakes up on the side of the road with no memory of how she got there, with a semi-erased message she left for herself her only clue. As she pieces together the evening before and all of the events leading up to it, a dark and sinister game is revealed. It's kind of a psychological thriller mystery--no zombies. A zombie apocalypse would be a reprieve for the poor characters in this book! (ominous music)

Thanks for having me on your blog, Liz! :)

Thanks so much to Courtney Summers for answering my questions! If you'd like to learn more about This Is Not A Test, you can visit Courtney Summer's author website.

Emily for Real Blog Tour! Author Interview with... Sylvia Gunnery

I'm very excited to be sharing a Q&A today with the very sweet and friendly Sylvia Gunnery, Canadian author of Emily for Real! Already released in Canada a few months ago, Emily for Real will soon be hitting shelves in the U.S. as well, and if you're in a need of a quick contemporary read, then you'll certainly want to consider adding the book onto your to-be-read shelves.

Thanks to Pajama Press, I was able to ask Sylvia Gunnery a few questions about her latest novel...

Seventeen-year-old Emily’s world crumbles when her boy friend dumps her, and when she thinks her life can’t possibly get any worse, a series of secrets are revealed that threaten to tear her beloved family apart. Emily’s heart has been broken into a hundred pieces and she feels like there is no one to turn to, until an unexpected friendship blossoms with a troubled classmate named Leo. Sometimes moody but always supportive, Leo is Emily’s rock in an ocean of confusion and disbelief.

But Leo doesn’t have an easy life either. He struggles to be both mother and father to his little sister while his mom battles her alcohol addiction. His deadbeat dad darts in and out of the picture, and Leo would rather he stay away, permanently. The two friends lean on each other, and in the end discover the inner strength to face whatever life throws at them.

With incredible insight into the teenage psyche and speckled with pitch-perfect humor, author Sylvia Gunnery has created a heart-warming coming-of-age story that explores the intricacies of family and friendship.

1) After Emily's grandfather passes away, family secrets begin to rise to the surface, shattering her life as she knows it. While I was reading, I kept wondering how everything was related to the book's title and if there was a particular reasoning behind it. How did you come up with the title Emily for Real?

Emily is 17 before she finds out about family secrets that definitely connect to how she sees herself. That’s the thing about secrecy I’ve always found compelling—when there’s something you don’t know, it’s like the life you’ve been living is not actually real. In this novel, Emily works herself through that space where she has to get a grip on who she is and redefine how she sees herself. The title works for me also because “for real” is an expression lots of teens use, so I liked the sound of the title.

2) To me, one of the most surprising aspects about the book was how a romance didn't form between Emily and Leo. Why did you decide to focus on a budding friendship between the pair instead, one which seems so unlikely at first?

I’m glad you were surprised. That makes things interesting—as long as you weren’t disappointed.

I’ve always believed that friendship can be a very powerful relationship between guys and girls (and adults, too, of course) and it doesn’t get a lot of attention in books. It’s almost a clichĂ© that male-female friendships eventually turn into romance. I wanted Emily to have the experience of a male friend’s point of view as she worked through her break up with Brian. And I agree that the friendship is unlikely, mostly because of Leo’s reluctance to connect with people in this kind of significant way. It was fun watching them take those very cautious steps toward their friendship. I can see them still as friends when they’re thirty.

3) One of my favourite moments in Emily for Real is when Emily meets Leo's adorable little sister on Halloween night. What was your favourite scene to write?

Thanks! That was a fun scene to write, with the awkwardness between Leo and Emily and the bit of fun with the “little pink candy-eating rabbit.” It’s hard to choose a favourite scene. I enjoyed Emily’s visits with Meredith at the nursing home, probably because it was like another visit with my Mom who had been in a nursing home for three years before she passed away. I also liked writing the scene in the school cafeteria when Emily “casually” walks past Brian and simply says hi. I was really cheering her on as she did that. (Are you getting the idea that I have a lot of favourite scenes? Better stop right now.)

4) As a Canadian, I definitely have a fondness for books set in Canada! Was there a particular reason why you decided to set the novel in Halifax, Nova Scotia?

I was born in Halifax and lived there until 1990 when I moved to Crescent Beach on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Though I had not planned to place this novel in Halifax, it just naturally came to the page. As Emily moved around her neighbourhood, it was my childhood neighbourhood. The bus trip she takes downtown is one I’ve taken thousands of times. Though I haven’t hitchhiked to North West Cove, it is one of my favourite places, not only because it is a beautiful fishing village but also because a dear friend and fellow writer, Budge Wilson, lives there.

5) In an earlier chapter, Emily and Leo work together to find the perfect theme song for a school project. What songs would be featured on a playlist for Emily for Real which helped to inspire the book?

For me, songs don’t inspire what I write and I usually don’t think about which songs would be on a playlist, though I’d be very keen to hear what readers might choose for Emily’s story. Perhaps the list would include strong instrumental acoustic guitar—something Leo would play: chaotic at times, melancholy, and then calmly hopeful as it ends.

6) How has your experience as a teacher influenced your writing and making your characters feel more realistic?

The influence of the hundreds and hundreds of teens I meet through my teaching is right at the top of the list of why I write what I write. What a privilege it is to have those very real connections with young people, especially in writing workshops where they’re exploring their own voices and themes…working through what matters to them. I learn so much! A bonus of being a writer is the chance to do author visits at schools and libraries all across Canada. Next spring, for example, I’m one of 30 authors, illustrators, and storytellers touring for TD Book Week 2013: www.bookweek.ca Very exciting!!

There is another way that being a teacher has influenced me as a writer. In my early teaching years, I clearly saw that my students just didn’t have stories that reflected their experiences. I wanted to hold up a mirror and say: Here you are. You count. Your lives are worth putting in books. Of course, readers will want to read all kinds of stuff from writers all around the world—fantasy fiction, thrillers, adventures, and lots more. I just wanted to make sure my students had the choice to read themselves.

7) Have you already started brainstorming ideas for your next YA novel?

Yes! Since May, I’ve been thinking about and making notes about my next book. Have you ever walked out on new lake ice—tentatively, holding your breath, listening for the least whisper of sound, noticing how the ice changes under your feet? Well, if you have, you know what I’ve been doing as I begin this next project. Not long ago, I wrote the first few pages. Everything is still tentative, but I can see the three sisters who are my main characters, and I know a bit about how they relate to each other and who they are separately. Now, it’s just a matter of making myself sit in this chair in front of this computer and get the work done. :)

Waiting on Wednesday (109) - The Essence by Kimberly Derting

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Release Date: January 1, 2013
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry

Summary (from Goodreads):
**Contains spoilers if you haven't read The Pledge!**
Poor child. Poor, wretched child. You have no idea what you’re up against. No idea how to stop me, do you?

Though it has been months since Charlaina—Charlie—defeated the tyrant Sabara and took control of the Ludanian crown, Sabara has not disappeared. The old queen’s Essence has fused itself to Charlie’s psyche and is viciously fighting to overpower Charlie.

Balancing her new duties as Queen and battling both Sabara’s voice and a growing resistance to her rule push Charlie to the brink of exhaustion. She wants to be the same old Charlie she has ever been but now she is Your Majesty.

As Charlie journeys to an annual summit to meet with the leaders of nearby Queendoms—an event where her ability to understand all languages is the utmost asset—she is faced with the ultimate betrayal. And the only person she can turn to for help is the evil soul residing within.

I really loved reading The Pledge when it was released near the end of 2011, and it feels like it's been such a long wait to see what would happen next in The Essence! Details for the book description were finally released not too long ago and I couldn't be any more excited. I'm anxious to see how Charlie will struggle against Sabara's Essence, which still remains inside her, and how she'll handle her responsibilities as Queen. And I'm wondering who will betray her... I'm sure I'll be gasping in shock when it happens!

Book Trailer! - Wake by Amanda Hocking

The book trailer for Wake, the first novel in the brand new Watersong series by Amanda Hocking, was revealed last week on EW's Shelf Life! I really enjoyed reading Amanda Hocking's Trylle Trilogy, so I'm hoping her latest novel will be just as addictive. I haven't read too many reviews of Wake yet, so I'm not too sure what to expect, but the theatrical approach to this book trailer has left me excited to read it. Enjoy the book trailer!

A Want So Wicked by Suzanne Young

Title: A Want So Wicked (A Need So Beautiful #2)
Author: Suzanne Young
Release Date: June 26, 2012 (hardcover)
Publisher: Balzer + Bray
Pages: 288
Source: ARC won thanks to Angie from Beneath The Jacket

Overall: 4.5 Stars

Summary:
Elise is a normal seventeen-year-old girl until the day she wakes up in a desert park with no idea who she is.

After that episode, her life takes a bizarre turn. She's experiencing unexpected flashes of insight into people's lives—people she's never met before. Strangers frighten her with warnings about the approaching Shadows. And although Elise has never had a boyfriend, she sudde nly finds herself torn between two handsome but very different young men: Abe, the charming bad boy whose effect on her both seduces and frightens her, and the mysterious Harlin, who's new to town but with whom Elise feels an urgent, elemental connection—almost as if they are soul mates.

Now Elise begins to question everything about her life. Why do these guys both want her so desperately? What are the Shadows? Why does the name Charlotte inspire a terrifying familiarity? And who is Elise, really?

My Thoughts:
After a heart-pounding, shocking finish to A Need So Beautiful, I was left desperately waiting to discover what would happen next in the follow-up novel, A Want So Wicked. Once again, I was addicted to Suzanne Young's poignant writing which made it oh so easy for the words to flow seamlessly off the pages.

Elise Landon opens her eyes and finds herself in a desert park, completely disoriented. Stumbling to get a sense of direction, she stares at her reflection in a car window, unable to recognize the face staring back at her with blonde hair and school-girl clothes nothing like what she's wearing. In the blink of an eye, the reflection fades away and everything seems like nothing but a strange dream...

Suddenly, Elise is getting flashes of insight into stranger's lives and a certain need to help them, and memories that don't belong to Elise keep overwhelming her. As she tries to make sense of the puzzle her life has become, her older sister, Lucy, slips further away and she finds herself caught between the attentions of two very handsome boys: Abe and Harlin. All the while, whispers of a girl named Charlotte and a woman who embraced the Shadows, Onika, haunt her.

The mere mention of Harlin still induces a happy sigh. I loved him in A Need So Beautiful, and I fell in love with him all over again in A Want So Wicked. There's just something about Harlin that makes me swoon! Elise may regard Abe as nothing more than a friend and coworker, but there's no question it's the mysterious Harlin who has captured her heart and awakened part of her soul.

What's interesting about A Want So Wicked is right from the start, readers can already recognize the signs which indicate what's happening to Elise; it's more than she understands herself. Nevertheless, as Elise learns more about the Forgotten, the Shadows, and her own role to play, you'll be admiring the compelling way Suzanne Young allows the events to unfold.

Both A Need So Beautiful and A Want So Wicked completely stand out for their very unique take on the angel genre, and I have a feeling it will remain that way for quite some time. While this is only a two-part series for now, I would definitely be open to reading a third novel because I'm not quite sure if I'm willing to part with the characters just yet!

Waiting on Wednesday (108) - Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Release Date: September 11, 2012
Publisher: Random House Books for Young Readers

Summary (from Goodreads):
Kami Glass loves someone she’s never met . . . a boy she’s talked to in her head ever since she was born. She wasn’t silent about her imaginary friend during her childhood, and is thus a bit of an outsider in her sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale. Still, Kami hasn’t suffered too much from not fitting in. She has a best friend, runs the school newspaper, and is only occasionally caught talking to herself. Her life is in order, just the way she likes it, despite the voice in her head.

But all that changes when the Lynburns return.

The Lynburn family has owned the spectacular and sinister manor that overlooks Sorry-in-the-Vale for centuries. The mysterious twin sisters who abandoned their ancestral home a generation ago are back, along with their teenage sons, Jared and Ash, one of whom is eerily familiar to Kami. Kami is not one to shy away from the unknown—in fact, she’s determined to find answers for all the questions Sorry-in-the-Vale is suddenly posing. Who is responsible for the bloody deeds in the depths of the woods? What is her own mother hiding? And now that her imaginary friend has become a real boy, does she still love him? Does she hate him? Can she trust him?

Ever since I read Team Human not long ago (co-written with Justine Larbalestier; my review), I've been extra excited for the release of Sarah Rees Brennan's upcoming novel, Unspoken. The first book in the series entitled The Lynburn Legacy, Unspoken sounds like a perfect combination of mystery, suspense and romance, along with a small-town vibe that is sure to bring the setting and characters to life! I also really like the Gothic-inspired book cover and I cannot wait to see what it will look like in person!

August Release Picks

How is it August already? Summer seems to be flying by! I've been obsessively watching the 2012 London Olympics (GO TEAM CANADA!), but I've tried to get some reading done as well. And I'm excited for mid-August because I'll heading to Turkey with my family for vacation. I think it's going to be quite the culture shock.

August is shaping up to be quite an awesome month for new books too! I've already read Andrea Cremer's Rift and Sarah J. Maas's Throne of Glass, and you'll definitely be wanting to get your hands on a copy when they're in stores! I really loved them both.

Here are this month's releases that I'm most looking forward to checking out! Once again, I've matched my Chapters/Indigo list, but I've also added a few more books here.
