Waiting on Wednesday (61) - Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Release Date: December 27, 2011
Publisher: EgmontUSA

Summary (from author's website):
Every other day, Kali D'Angelo is a normal sixteen-year-old girl. She goes to public high school. She attends pep rallies. She's human.

And then every day in between...She's something else entirely.

Though she still looks like herself, every twenty-four hours predatory instincts take over and Kali becomes a feared demon-hunter with the undeniable urge to hunt, trap, and kill zombies, hellhounds, and other supernatural creatures. Kali has no idea why she is the way she is, but she gives in to instinct anyway. Even though the government considers it environmental terrorism.

When Kali notices a mark on the lower back of a popular girl at school, she knows instantly that the girl is marked for death by one of these creatures. Kali has twenty-four hours to save her and, unfortunately, she'll have to do it as a human. With the help of a few new friends, Kali takes a risk that her human body might not survive...and learns the secrets of her mysterious condition in the process.

Aren't you just in love with the concept of Every Other Day? I know I sure am! Can you imagine having special powers... only to not be able to use them on the day you need it the most? I think this will be great supernatural novel to read and I'm looking forward to learning more about Kali's abilities! I'm also intrigued by its cover too...

The Liar Society by Lisa & Laura Roecker

Title: The Liar Society (Liar Society #1)
Author: Lisa & Laura Roecker
Release Date: March 15, 2011 (paperback)
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire
Pages: 368
Source: Bought

Overall: 4 Stars

Summary:
Since when do the dead send emails?

Kate Lowry’s best friend Grace died a year ago. So when she gets an email from her, Kate’s more than a little confused.

To: KateLowry@pemberlybrown.edu
From: GraceLee@pemberlybrown.edu
Subject: (no subject)
Kate,
I’m here… sort of.
Find Cameron. He knows.
I shouldn’t be writing.
Don’t tell. They’ll hurt you.

Now Kate has no choice but to prove once and for all that Grace’s death was more than just a tragic accident. She teams up with a couple of knights-in-(not-so)-shining armor—the dangerously hot bad boy, Liam, and her lovestruck neighbor, Seth. But at their elite private school, there are secrets so big people will do anything to protect them—even if it means getting rid of anyone trying to solve a murder...

My Thoughts:
The Liar Society was an absolute fun novel to read filled with plenty of entertainment! Lisa and Laura Roecker have written a great debut novel together which will be sure to bring out your inner detective nature. I read the novel in one sitting, perfectly content to eagerly flip through the pages as I tried to unravel, along with Kate, the mystery of her best friend’s death a year ago.

Kate has always suspected there was more to Grace’s death but no one would ever believe her. A year later, a mysterious email drops into Kate’s inbox from Grace… and this time, Kate’s determined to finally learn the truth. I don’t know how you could possibly not like her as a main character! Despite the rough year she’s had, mourning for Grace and becoming ostracized by others at school, she’s still able to maintain an upbeat attitude most of the time with a touch of sarcasm that brings out a laugh. She’s also resourceful and independent, but not afraid to ask for help when she needs it.

The romance in the novel was cute and not too serious. Liam was handsome, charming and quite kind, despite the bad boy reputation we were told he had when we were first introduced to him. He’s a young man with secrets though, which left my mind buzzing– and suspicions high– to think he had something to do with Grace’s death. I’m glad Kate was smart enough to keep her guard up around him until she got the full story! And then there is Seth, Kate’s geeky friend and next-door neighbour, who played the part of the adorable sidekick with his obvious crush on Kate. He just made me smile whenever he was in a scene!

Witty and surprisingly light, The Liar Society is an easy choice for those looking for a great mystery to be solved along with suspense. You’ll be cheering for Kate from the very beginning to succeed and catch the culprits before it’s too late! I’m looking forward to see what will happen next in book two of the series, The Lies That Bind!

Spotted! Cover of This Is Not A Test by Courtney Summers

Canadian author Courtney Summers revealed the cover of her upcoming novel, This Is Not A Test, yesterday afternoon on her blog!

Release Date: June 2012
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin

Summary (from author's website):
It’s the end of the world. Six students have taken cover in Cortege High but shelter is little comfort when the dead outside won’t stop pounding on the doors. One bite is all it takes to kill a person and bring them back as a monstrous version of their former self. To Sloane Price, that doesn’t sound so bad. Six months ago, her world collapsed and since then, she’s failed to find a reason to keep going. Now seems like the perfect time to give up.

As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live. But as the days crawl by, everyone’s motivations to survive begin to change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life–and death–inside.

When everything is gone, what do you hold on to?

I have absolutely enjoyed Courtney Summer's previous three novels, so reading This Is Not A Test is a must for me! I like how she's moving away from contemporary to write a zombie novel this time around... It should be awesome!

How do you like the cover? I really love it! Everything from the red blood splatter in the corner to the fonts used and the blue background just screams it's a win for me! The posture of the girl makes us question if it's a zombie and/or Sloane too...

The wait until June to read This Is Not A Test will be a long one!

The Beginning of After by Jennifer Castle

Title: The Beginning of After
Author: Jennifer Castle
Release Date: September 6, 2011 (hardcover)
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 432
Source: ARC provided by author

Overall: 5 Stars

Summary:
Anyone who’s had something truly crappy happen to them will tell you: It’s all about Before and After. What I’m talking about here is the ka-pow, shake-you-to-your-core-and-turn-your-bones-to-plastic kind of crappy.

Sixteen-year-old Laurel’s world changes instantly when her parents and brother are killed in a terrible car accident. Behind the wheel is the father of her bad-boy neighbor, David Kaufman, whose mother is also killed. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Laurel navigates a new reality in which she and her best friend grow apart, boys may or may not be approaching her out of pity, overpowering memories lurk everywhere, and Mr. Kaufman is comatose but still very much alive. Through it all there is David, who swoops in and out of Laurel’s life and to whom she finds herself attracted against her better judgment. She will forever be connected to him by their mutual loss—a connection that will change them both in unexpected ways.

Jennifer Castle’s debut novel is a heart-wrenching, surprisingly witty testament to how drastically life can change in the span of a single moment.

MyThoughts:
My love for The Beginning of After first began when I first saw its absolutely gorgeous cover... and after I read what the novel was about, I had a warm gut feeling it would be a contemporary novel I would come to really enjoy as well. Jennifer Castle has made a wonderful debut with The Beginning of After… and its cover is a perfect reflection of its contents. Laurel is filled with pain and grief for her family, but despite all of this, there’s always a ray of light and love that shines through for Laurel in her moments of darkness.

I have so much admiration for Laurel and how she continued to persevere in the face of such a horrific and tragic turn of events. I silently wept for Laurel’s loss as she struggled to cope and come to terms with the “after” of the car incident that changed her life forever. Even though I knew what would happen to Laurel’s family, it was still so sad to read and her grief became my own. She channels her pain into working with animals… and focusing on her schoolwork so she could attend a good college and make her parents proud.

There’s a comforting familiarity to Jennifer Castle’s writing. It’s not as poetic as I might have assumed… but it still strikes right into your core. And while romance is certainly incorporated into the story, I wouldn’t exactly consider it the main focus. Laurel’s relationship with David is a complicated one at best. Their families may have been friends but it’s hard for Laurel to think about David without her thoughts leading to his now comatose father, the man behind the wheel who Laurel finds responsible for the accident. David’s path in dealing with his grief takes an entirely different path compared to Laurel’s, but as time progresses, we slowly see how these two can help heal each other for the better.

For those who love reading contemporary novels that hit all the right spots in your heart, Jennifer Castle’s The Beginning of After is not to be missed. It’s a beautiful novel of loss and heartbreak… but also of healing and hope. I’m already looking forward to reading Jennifer Castle’s next novel!

Waiting on Wednesday (60) - Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Release Date: December 6, 2011
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry

Summary (from Goodreads):
In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street—and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.

With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.

Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, but her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will—the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?

As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.

There are books I'm looking forward to reading... and then there are some books where I completely fan-girl my excitement and hunt down all the teasers I can find. In the case of the second novel of the Infernal Devices trilogy, that would definitely be the case! I loved Clockwork Angel with its mix of historical fiction and the supernatural, so I'm most definitely counting down the days until I can read Clockwork Prince!

The Demon Trapper's Daughter by Jana Oliver

Title: The Demon Trapper's Daughter (The Demon Trappers #1)
Author: Jana Oliver
Release Date: February 1, 2011 (paperback)
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Pages: 340
Source: Bought

Overall: 3.5 Stars

Summary:
Riley Blackthorne just needs a chance to prove herself – and that’s exactly what the demons are counting on…

Seventeen-year-old Riley, the only daughter of legendary Demon Trapper, Paul Blackthorne, has always dreamed of following in her father's footsteps. The good news is, with human society seriously disrupted by economic upheaval and Lucifer increasing the number of demons in all major cities, Atlanta’s local Trappers’ Guild needs all the help they can get – even from a girl. When she’s not keeping up with her homework or trying to manage her growing crush on fellow apprentice, Simon, Riley’s out saving distressed citizens from foul-mouthed little devils – Grade One Hellspawn only, of course, per the strict rules of the Guild. Life’s about as normal as can be for the average demon-trapping teen.

But then a Grade Five Geo-Fiend crashes Riley’s routine assignment at a library, jeopardizing her life and her chosen livelihood. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, sudden tragedy strikes the Trappers’ Guild, spinning Riley down a more dangerous path than she ever could have imagined. As her whole world crashes down around her, who can Riley trust with her heart – and her life?

My Thoughts:
I’ve been looking forward to reading The Demon Trapper’s Daughter for quite some time now, and while it took me longer than I expected to finally have a chance to read it, I’m glad I did. I’m always fascinated by novels where demons play a central part… and I wasn’t disappointed in that regard because we were quickly thrown right into the action from the very beginning!

Jana Oliver has introduced a dark, near-future Atlanta where demons walk among us and where catching them is up to the task of demon trappers who work for the Guild. It’s a constant ongoing battle, with the higher graded demons being the most dangerous… but for seventeen year-old Riley Blackthorne, she would never dream of anything else. Despite the antagonism from the males in her local Trappers Guild, she has always tried to prove her worth and to show them that she’s just as capable as any of them to get the job done.

I really liked Riley’s resilience and determination… and it was a sure good thing she had loads of both. She’s really pulled through the ringer in the novel! Her life begins to crumble when a sudden tragedy occurs in the beginning of the novel, and then everything else that happens in the story afterwards sort of revolves around it. Just when you think things couldn’t possibly get worse for Riley, some obstacle would appear that tried to knock her down. I just felt so bad for her!

As for the romance though… I wasn’t feeling so much love. Simon, another apprentice, never struck me as someone I could grow more of an attachment with. I really thought the only reason Riley was crushing on him was because she thought he was cute, whereas I would have liked to have seen a deeper connection. Beck, trained by Riley’s father and his trapping partner, stepped up for Riley when she really needed someone but even he kind of got on my nerves at times… especially when his point of view was told.

While I felt the romance was rather on the weak side, The Demon Trapper’s Daughter should prove to be a solid read if you’re looking for an exciting supernatural tale with a tough, main protagonist who’s unafraid to back down from a challenge. There were definitely some questions raised about the sudden interest many of the demons were showing into Riley… I sure hope we begin to get some answers when Soul Thief is released!

Juliet Immortal by Stacey Jay

Title: Juliet Immortal
Author: Stacey Jay
Release Date: August 9, 2011 (hardcover)
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Pages: 320
Source: Bought

Overall: 4.5 Stars

Summary:
"These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die, like fire and powder,
Which as they kiss consume."
—Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare

The most tragic love story in history...

Juliet Capulet didn't take her own life. She was murdered by the person she trusted most, her new husband, Romeo Montague, a sacrifice made to ensure his own immortality. But what Romeo didn't anticipate was that Juliet would be granted eternity, as well, and would become an agent for the Ambassadors of Light. For 700 years, she's fought Romeo for the souls of true lovers, struggling to preserve romantic love and the lives of the innocent. Until the day she meets someone she's forbidden to love, and Romeo, oh Romeo, will do everything in his power to destroy that love.

My Thoughts:
I love reading Stacey Jay’s novels… so when I first heard about her latest novel and the cool concept of bringing a twist to Romeo & Juliet, it became an instant must-read! And if you're not a fan of Shakespeare’s works, then don't worry because it isn’t required to make you fall in love with the novel!

We already know that when Juliet falls for someone, she falls very hard and quickly… and no stretch of time will truly change that. For over 700 years, Juliet has been working tirelessly for the Ambassadors of Light, fighting a battle in the name of love and saving souls against the Mercenaries and Romeo, the husband who betrayed her for an immortal life. When Juliet is sent into the body of Ariel Dragland to help her, little does she ever suspect that she could fall in love again…

Stacey Jay has breathed new life into characters we all thought we knew and given them new dimension. Juliet has lost her naivety and grown steadily wiser over time, learning from her past mistakes to help fuel her revenge against Romeo. And while Juliet finds herself growing closer and closer to Ben, she also knows that she can’t be distracted from her task… not when Romeo is always close behind, bringing danger along with him.

Romeo, oh Romeo… He could be sweet and charming one moment, and then pure evil and violent the next time! He’s a twisted, tortured soul after years of wandering Earth without being able to truly feel anything… and yet, you still hope he can find redemption for his actions.

Until the very last page, I was left wondering what would happen next and after reading the book, I kept thinking how I should have figured out how the puzzles would fall in place. I guess my skills at predicting events failed me this time because I didn’t see it until it actually happened. There was plenty of excitement and surprises to be discovered… and I love how Stacey Jay kept me on my toes the entire time!

The first in a two-part series, Juliet Immortal didn’t disappoint and I’m already eagerly looking forward to reading Romeo Redeemed! Juliet’s story may have reached a fitting conclusion… but there is definitely more to Romeo than meets the eye. I can’t wait to see what will happen!

    Fury by Elizabeth Miles

    Title: Fury (Fury #1)
    Author: Elizabeth Miles
Release Date: August 30, 2011 (hardcover)
    Publisher: Simon Pulse
    Pages: 352
    Source: ARC provided by publisher

    Overall: 3 Stars

    Summary:
    Sometimes sorry isn't enough....

It’s winter break in Ascension, Maine. The snow is falling and everything looks pristine and peaceful. But not all is as it seems...

Between cozy traditions and parties with her friends, Emily loves the holidays. And this year’s even better--the guy she’s been into for months is finally noticing her. But Em knows if she starts things with him, there’s no turning back. Because his girlfriend is Em’s best friend.

On the other side of town, Chase is having problems of his own. The stress of his home life is starting to take its toll, and his social life is unraveling. But that’s nothing compared to what’s really haunting him. Chase has done something cruel...something the perfect guy he pretends to be would never do. And it’s only a matter of time before he’s exposed.

In Ascension, mistakes can be deadly. And three girls—three beautiful, mysterious girls—are here to choose who will pay.

Em and Chase have been chosen.

    My Thoughts:
I began reading Fury with guarded expectations. The novel may feature a beautiful cover with one of the Furies, but I’ve been hearing mixed comments about the novel… and I can really understand why after reading the book. But if one of my main goals of the novel was to make you anticipate seeing two teens pay the consequences of their bad judgements, then I think Fury has accomplished its job.

It’s really difficult for me to lose myself in a story when I can’t connect with the characters, and with Fury, this was definitely an aspect which made it harder for me to truly like the novel more. I could hardly round up any sympathy for Chase and if I did feel anything for him, those traces swiftly disappeared after learning what he had done to make the Furies choose him as a target. He was such a phony person, pretending to be something he wasn’t and caring only about the materialistic. I can’t exactly say I felt too bad for him when the Furies decided his fate as it was just too hard to find a real redeeming quality about him.

As for Em… I don’t necessarily think it was right that the Furies were after her, but she wasn’t exactly an angel either. Her best friend, Gabby, could be rather annoying, but she didn’t deserve Em’s dishonesty. Em may be a popular girl, but she actually has a lot of self-pity and feels that she doesn’t get much attention. So when Gabby’s boyfriend, Zach, starts noticing her more, it’s not really her fault that she’s under the possible illusion that a guy like him could like her. I don’t know, sometimes I liked her as a character… and at others, I just wanted to shake her to make her see that her childhood friend and neighbour, JD, would have been such a better influence for her. She’s a slow learner, I guess.

Elizabeth Miles has certainly set the stage for the next novel in the trilogy, Envy, though. If Miles can maintain the excitement that was the final build-up in Fury, then I’m sure I will enjoy the next novel so much more. I’m really glad we got a glimpse as to who will be the next target to pay for their actions because if there was ever a character that deserved the attention of the Furies, it would be this person. My dark side has come out to play and I think it’s going to be absolute fun seeing the next victim brought down by the beautiful Furies!

Thanks so much to Simon & Schuster Canada for providing this review copy!

Book Trailer! - The Eleventh Plague by Jeff Hirsch

The book trailer for The Eleventh Plague, Jeff Hirsch's debut YA novel, was recently revealed on his blog and Scholastic Canada's facebook page. The Eleventh Plague is a dystopian, standalone novel... and Suzanne Collins has even quoted it too!

I'm not really a huge fan of the cover, but it should be able to appeal to both girls and boys! I haven't read too many reviews for the novel yet but I won an early copy a few months ago (haven't had a chance to read it yet though), so I hope it turns out to be a great read!

    Release Date: September 1, 2011
    Publisher: Scholastic Press

    Summary:
In an America devastated by war and plague, the only way to survive is to keep moving.

In the aftermath of a war, America's landscape has been ravaged and two-thirds of the population left dead from a vicious strain of influenza. Fifteen-year-old Stephen Quinn and his family were among the few that survived and became salvagers, roaming the country in search of material to trade for food and other items essential for survival. But when Stephen's grandfather dies and his father falls into a coma after an accident, Stephen finds his way to Settler's Landing, a community that seems too good to be true, where there are real houses, barbecues, a school, and even baseball games. Then Stephen meets strong, defiant, mischievous Jenny, who refuses to accept things as they are. And when they play a prank on the town bully's family that goes horribly wrong, chaos erupts, and they find themselves in the midst of a battle that will change Settler's Landing forever.

      Supernaturally by Kiersten White

      Title: Supernaturally (Paranormalcy #2)

Release Date: July 26, 2011 (hardcover)
      Publisher: HarperTeen
      Pages: 352
      Source: Bought

      Overall: 5 Stars

      Summary:
Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.

But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. The prize in question? Evie herself.

      So much for normal.

      My Thoughts:
Paranormalcy was easily one of my favourite novels released in 2010, so when I began reading Supernaturally, it was only natural that I would have high expectations. I’m so glad to say I wasn’t disappointed one bit! Once again, Kiersten White delivers in the best possible way to give us another bleeping awesome novel!

While I didn’t think the plot was necessarily as strong as its predecessor, Supernaturally makes up for it with its ever fun and light writing style that I completely adore. And, of course, there was Jack, a new character introduced to us. Now, before you all start groaning about another love interest, I’m going to point out that he isn’t one. Instead, Jack keeps Evie (and us!) on our toes with his love for causing a bit of mischief and becomes a friend for her when she needs one. And speaking of Evie, she may have had good intentions but she did make some misguided decisions in the novel. But, I can forgive her this time as she learned from them… which is important in my books!

I did wish there was a bit more of Lend in the novel, but I still think of him as an absolute sweetheart. Evie might be willing to keep a secret or two from him, but I was silently pleading with her to share the burden of what she had learned because you just know that he would understand with his kind, caring ways. And Reth fans! I’m sure you’ll be glad to know that he’s back and willing to share some of his knowledge of Evie’s mysterious heritage that has relations to the faeries. You may just be taken by surprise with what you learn!

If you haven’t even read Paranormalcy yet, seriously, what are still waiting for? These novels are like a breath of fresh air in a genre that can become overcrowded with too many supernatural lookalikes. And just as with Paranormalcy, I have fallen in love with Supernaturally too! Now there’s just the anxious year-long wait to see how the trilogy will finish with Endlessly…

Waiting on Wednesday (58) - The Disenchantments by Nina LaCour

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

      Release Date: February 16, 2012
      Publisher: Dutton Juvenile

      Summary (from Goodreads):
Colby and Bev have a long-standing pact: graduate, hit the road with Bev’s band, and then spend the year wandering around Europe. But moments after the tour kicks off, Bev makes a shocking announcement: she’s abandoning their plans—and Colby—to start college in the fall.

But the show must go on and The Disenchantments weave through the Pacific Northwest, playing in small towns and dingy venues, while roadie-Colby struggles to deal with Bev’s already-growing distance and the most important question of all: what’s next?

Morris Award–finalist Nina LaCour draws together the beauty and influences of music and art to brilliantly capture a group of friends on the brink of the rest of their lives.

I have such a fondness for contemporary novels that are influenced by music, so when I first heard about The Disenchantments, I just had to instantly add it to my TBR list! I also really like how the teens are older and set to enter the next chapter of their lives because it's another aspect I can relate to since I'm around that age as well. Plus, there's a road trip! Every single novel that I've read with a road trip is one I have pretty much always loved, so I'm hoping it will be the case with The Disenchantments as well.

And as for the cover? It's so pretty and light on the eyes! I would buy the book for its cover alone. Just saying.

      Wildefire by Karsten Knight

      Title: Wildefire (Wildefire #1)
      Author: Karsten Knight
Release Date: July 26, 2011 (hardcover)
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Children's Publishing
      Pages: 400
      Source: ARC provided by publisher

      Overall: 4 Stars

      Summary:
Every flame begins with a spark.

Ashline Wilde is having a rough sophomore year. She’s struggling to find her place as the only Polynesian girl in school, her boyfriend just cheated on her, and now her runaway sister, Eve, has decided to barge back into her life. When Eve’s violent behavior escalates and she does the unthinkable, Ash transfers to a remote private school nestled in California’s redwoods, hoping to put the tragedy behind her. But her fresh start at Blackwood Academy doesn’t go as planned. Just as Ash is beginning to enjoy the perks of her new school—being captain of the tennis team, a steamy romance with a hot, local park ranger—Ash discovers that a group of gods and goddesses have mysteriously enrolled at Blackwood…and she’s one of them. To make matters worse, Eve has resurfaced to haunt Ash, and she’s got some strange abilities of her own. With a war between the gods looming over campus, Ash must master the new fire smoldering within before she clashes with her sister one more time… And when warm and cold fronts collide, there’s guaranteed to be a storm.

      My Thoughts:
Karsten Knight has sure made a fiery entrance to the YA scene with his debut novel, Wildefire! Sure, we’ve seen boarding schools and novels influenced by mythology before, but Wildefire still brings a certain fresh touch of originality which makes it definitely stand on its own.

A highlight of the novel was the complex relationship which Ashline and Eve shared as sisters. Eve may think she’s acting in her sister’s best interests and love her, but there’s a scary intensity to Eve that just makes you want to run away while you still can. She’s a dangerous person and if anyone can stop her from causing havoc, it’s only Ash who may stand a chance. Meanwhile, Ash is courageous and you would never want to be on her bad side because she’ll take you down the first chance she gets … but Eve has always been her weakness, bringing out her vulnerable side.

I really liked how Karsten Knight introduces varying mythologies from around the world through his diverse cast of characters! The reincarnated gods and goddesses in human form each have their own abilities that trace back to their mythological origins, but they’re still very much their own individuals. They’ve been mysteriously drawn to Blackwood Academy, where they all hope to learn more about their steadily emerging powers. The only downside was that I had already known what kind of goddess Ash was, so it did diminish some of the excitement as I had to wait for her to finally pull through and learn that information for herself.

But, oh my gosh… the ending! How could Karsten Knight end the novel on such a note? Talk about a cliff-hanger ending that will leave its readers desperate for the next novel! Right when you think everything is running much more smoothly for Ashline, Karsten attacks his readers while they least expect it, leading to completely surprising results… and the realization that there are no more pages to read in the book.

I am really looking forward to seeing how the events will continue to draw out in Embers & Echoes, the second novel in the trilogy. I’m sure it will be exciting! If you love mythology-influenced novels with a dash of romance and a feisty heroine leading the way, then I’m sure you’ll be eager to read Wildefire!

Thanks so much to Simon & Schuster Canada for sending me this review copy! And if you missed it before, you can read my author interview with Karsten Knight.

      Epic Fail by Claire LaZebnik

      Title: Epic Fail
      Author: Claire LaZebnik
Release Date: August 2, 2011 (paperback)
      Publisher: HarperTeen
      Pages: 288
      Source: ARC provided by author

      Overall: 4.5 Stars

      Summary:
Will Elise’s love life be an epic win or an epic fail?

At Coral Tree Prep in Los Angeles, who your parents are can make or break you. Case in point:

As the son of Hollywood royalty, Derek Edwards is pretty much prince of the school—not that he deigns to acknowledge many of his loyal subjects.

As the daughter of the new principal, Elise Benton isn’t exactly on everyone’s must-sit-next-to-at-lunch list.

When Elise’s beautiful sister catches the eye of the prince’s best friend, Elise gets to spend a lot of time with Derek, making her the envy of every girl on campus. Except she refuses to fall for any of his rare smiles and instead warms up to his enemy, the surprisingly charming social outcast Webster Grant. But in this hilarious tale of fitting in and flirting, not all snubs are undeserved, not all celebrity brats are bratty, and pride and prejudice can get in the way of true love for only so long.

      My Thoughts:
Claire LaZebnik’s debut YA novel, Epic Fail, is a delightful, modern take on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice! I loved the new spin on the classic romance novel we all know and hold dear in our hearts… and even if you have never read it, there are still no worries because you’ll be sure to fall in love with Epic Fail either way. (And, seriously, how awesome is that book title?)

Just like with Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy, you’ll be able to easily see the chemistry between Elise and Derek. It was so sweet seeing the pair grow as individuals as Elise saw past her prejudice and Derek overcame his pride so that the two could finally be together. Elise had a wicked sense of humour that had me laughing and smiling, while Derek definitely also had his moments too. Claire LaZebnik always kept the story fresh as she subtly interwove similar moments from Jane Austen’s version while also deviating to give her own new take in unraveling events.

Seeing Jane Austen’s characters moved into a present-day setting was a fun experience. Juliana, Elise’s older sister, and Chase, Derek’s best friend, made the cutest couple with their matching kind-hearted personalities. Mrs. Benton, the new Principle of Coral Tree Prep and the Elise’s mother, is just as frustrating, irritating and embarrassing as her original counterpart. And could Layla be any more annoying? I just wanted to reach into the pages and give the younger Benton girl a smack for her immature behaviour! And, of course, there’s the charming Webster Grant who may not be so honest after all…

Epic Fail is a perfect, cute read for the summer and I’m sure you won’t want to miss out on reading it! I easily breezed through the pages in no time at all, completing the novel in one sitting and wishing it didn’t have to end. I will be absolutely looking forward to reading more novels by Claire LaZebnik, that’s for sure!

There Is No Dog by Meg Rosoff

      Title: There is No Dog
      Author: Meg Rosoff
Release Date: August 2, 2011 (hardcover)
      Publisher: Doubleday Canada
      Pages: 256
      Source: Copy provided by publisher

      Overall: 2.5 Stars

      Summary:
Meet your unforgettable protagonist: God, who, as it turns out, is a 19-year-old boy living in the present-day and sharing an apartment with his long-suffering fifty-something personal assistant. Unfortunately for the planet, God is lazy and, frankly, hopeless. He created all of the world's species in six days because he couldn't summon the energy to work for longer. He gets Africa and America mixed up. And his beleaguered assistant has his work cut out for him when God creates a near-apocalyptic flood, having fallen asleep without turning the bath off. There is No Dog is a darkly funny novel from one of our most delightfully unpredictable writers.

      My Thoughts:
I’m not really sure what to make out of There is No Dog. It was my first time reading a novel by Meg Rosoff and the only thing I really kept thinking as I flipped the pages was, “This book is weird.” And I have no idea if I should consider that as a good or bad thing…

I didn’t really care much for the cast of characters. I don’t mind reading novels with changing perspectives, but it kept switching so much in There is No Dog that it made it difficult for me to lose myself in the story. Bob, or God, is your worst image possible of a typical teenage boy, not thinking with his head and utterly unconcerned with Earth’s affairs. He could be sweet and charming if he wanted to be, but otherwise, I think he annoyed me more often than I would have liked.

Mr B, his assistant, has been left to pick up the slack due to Bob’s lack of responsibility but there’s always too much to do, and he doesn’t have the same authority and power as Bob does. Mr B was also the only character I felt any real sympathy for. And then there’s the beautiful human Lucy, a kind, young women working at a zoo and completely unaware that one innocent prayer to fall in love would actually catch the attention of God, himself. There were definitely more perspectives that the story was told from though than these three characters, including at some points, from the view of Bob’s pet, Eck, because there was a storyline that revolved around him…

There wasn’t really a clear cut plot outline for the novel either. As I continued to read, I kept wondering which direction Meg Rosoff was leading in… and as far as expectations go, I wasn’t exactly sure what to think at all. There’s a certain quirkiness to There is No Dog, a humour that I’m sure would have held more appreciation in someone else’s eyes, but for me, I wasn’t exactly feeling the love at the time. I might have taken the novel too seriously sometimes, but I was rather affronted by the idea that Bob could have so little disregard for his own creations when so many people looked up to him for hope in times of despair. (A part of me kept waiting for Bob to see the error of his ways...)

I still think There is No Dog should have some points for creativity and imagination because Meg Rosoff has definitely created a novel unlike any I’ve ever really read before. I’d been really intrigued with the premise of the novel, but the characters just simply didn’t connect with me this time around. I thought the book was just okay, with a certain level of enjoyment and an odd sort of fascination that allowed me to stick through the book until the very end.

Thanks to Random House Canada for sending this review copy!

      In My Mailbox (42)

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren where we share any new books or goodies we bought, received, borrowed, etc. during the week.

      This week I got...

      Received for Review:

Thanks so much to Scholastic Canada, HarperCollins Canada, and Random House Canada for sending these novels to review! (The Project has a really shiny, red cover that's hard to capture with a camera...)

      Bought:

My sister was really happy when her order for Texas Gothic came in this week so she could pick up. We kept waiting for the book to arrive in store, but we still didn't see it at any of our local Chapters' so we just went ahead and ordered it instead. I can't wait to read it, so I'll definitely have to borrow the novel from her when she's finished reading it!

And I finished Fateful at 4 a.m. this morning! It was so unbelievably good! My Mom came into my room, noticing my light was still on and told me to go to sleep, and I was like, "I CAN'T!!!". (But, you know, in a whispered tone because it was late.)

What about YOU? Any new reads/finds this week?

      And as always... Happy Reading!

         Release Date: March 20, 2012
        Publisher: Disney Hyperion

        Summary (from Goodreads):
With more than a million Gallagher Girls books sold, a legion of fans have fallen in love with the New York Times best-selling spy-girl series, and the fifth book delivers the most nerve-wracking, high-stakes adventure yet.

The last thing Cammie Morgan remembers is leaving the Gallagher Academy to protect her friends and family. But when Cammie wakes up in an alpine convent and discovers months have passed, her memory is a black hole. The only traces left of Cammie’s summer vacation are the bruises on her body and dirt under her nails. All she wants is to go home. But even the Gallagher Academy now holds more questions than answers as Cammie and her friends face their most difficult challenge yet. With only their training and a few clues to guide them, the girls go in search of answers on the other side of the world. But the Circle is hot on their trail and will stop at nothing to prevent Cammie from remembering what she did last summer.
I really love the Gallagher Girls series and with each book, the stakes are only getting bigger and the events are becoming more exciting! There were so many awesome twists and turns in the previous book, Only the Good Spy Young, that I'm so eager to see what will be happening next. The cover for Out of Sight, Out of Time is another cute one and I'm so glad they've continued to match the cover concepts with the previous ones.

Are you excited for Out of Sight, Out of Time as well?
