The Second Trial by Rosemarie Boll

Title: The Second Trial
Author: Rosemarie Boll
Release Date: April 1, 2010 (trade paperback)
Publisher: Second Story Press
Pages: 319
Source: Borrowed from Library

Overall: 3 Stars

Summary:
What do you do when your father becomes the enemy of your family? A thirteen year-old boy must leave his home, his school, and everything he knows when he goes into hiding with his mother and sister to escape an abusive father. Thirteen-year-old Danny never knew that his father was abusing his mother, until the day his father almost killed her. Now he finds himself in court as his mother fights to have his father kept in jail to keep the family safe. But Danny can’t believe that he is a danger to them, cannot reconcile the father he looks up to with the man who almost took his mother’s life. When the limits of the justice system allow his father to be released, Danny’s mother decides that he and his little sister must accompany her into hiding. They will go to another city and begin a new life, with new identities. And so begins the second trial in Danny’s life, as everything he’s known is taken from him. How can he be happy in this new life, where he has a new name, no friends, and none of the comforts he’s used to? As his mother struggles to support the family, Danny is torn between loving and hating her, blaming her for everything. In his anger he turns to the school’s gang of bullies, but a young girl named Nixxie might be his way to find acceptance in this new life.
My Thoughts:
I don't think I could ever read The Second Trial for its enjoyment factor...no, it deals with subject matter that is too serious for that. Once finishing this novel, you'll have a better understanding of how domestic abuse affects not just victims, but so many other family members and friends as well. It's not talked about so often in YA, so I appreciated Rosemarie Boll's debut novel all the more.

For Danny McMillan, it was the beginning of the end of his parent's marriage when he dialed 9-1-1 after finding his mother seriously hurt at the bottom of the stairs... and what would come to proceed would change his life forever. During the trial, Danny learns that his father is not the man he thought he always was and that he's been abusing his mother for years. So when his father receives a very light sentence, Danny, his younger sister, and his mother enter into a witness protection program complete with new identities and a new home... fearing for their lives. But Danny's not sure of anything anymore... least of all what the future has in store for him.

There were moments when I literally wanted to throw this book at a wall. My outrage matched Danny's mother's horror at learning that her soon to be ex-husband would be getting off light for what he had done. It was seriously upsetting to learn that after years of abuse- after his mother finally got the courage to speak up- that the Canadian legal justice system could fail them when they needed it to help them the most. I completely sympathized with Danny's mother and couldn't imagine the pain and anguish she must have felt when she heard the final verdict. She's a resilient and strong women though, so while many others would have simply given up, she doesn't give up hope for the future and focuses on her main priorities... protecting herself and her children.

Danny was a whole other matter though. Only thirteen years old, he's not quite old enough yet to recognize the seriousness of the situation or the years of abuse his mother has been hiding for quite some time. He doesn't fully believe that his father could be so dangerous and is angry at the way his life has changed so much in so little time. He begins to lash out at others, especially his mother, and acts like life sucks so he should just stop trying anymore. It was frustrating because it does seem natural that he would begin to act out, but I was also really disappointed with many of the choices he made in this novel.

The Second Trial is a novel about speaking up for yourself and finding the hidden courage you never thought you had. Life's not always easy and the bad guys do get away more often than they should... but this doesn't mean you just give up. It's a novel that touches on serious subjects but at the end of the day, it still remains to be a hopeful one.

*The Second Trial is nominated for the 2011 White Pine Award.*

Spotted! Cover of Lost in Time by Melissa de la Cruz

Melissa de la Cruz revealed the cover of Lost in Time, the sixth book in the Blue Bloods series, today on her blog where she also included a short behind-the-scenes video of the cover shoot!

Release Date: October 4, 2011
Publisher: Hyperion

Summary: *Caution - Possible Spoilers Ahead*
There's no official plot description yet but according to Hollywood Crush, where the Lost in Time cover sneak peek was first featured, the novel "picks up with Schuyler Van Alen and her love Jack Force forced to go their separate ways after their trip to Florence. She must travel to Alexandria to fulfill the Van Alen legacy by searching for Catherine of Siena and the Gate of Promise, while he returns to the Big Apple to face his twin sister (and former bondmate) Mimi. Things get even more complicated when Mimi jets off to Egypt to find her former lover Kingsley Martin, all while the Coven threatens to fall apart around her."
I bought the fifth book, Misguided Angel, but haven't read it yet. (My sister has though and I believe she enjoyed it...) My interest in the Blue Bloods series is starting to wane... maybe that's because I'm thinking the series is beginning to stretch on for too long. I guess, for some book series, I like knowing that an end is in sight and I've read somewhere that there's going to be up to nine books in the series.

Anyways, there's no harm in admiring a pretty cover right? And this one featuring Schuyler and Jack is very nice indeed!

Are you a Blue Bloods fan? What do you think of the cover?

Strings Attached by Judy Blundell

Title: Stings Attached
Author: Judy Blundell
Release Date: March 1, 2011
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Pages: 320
Source: Copy received from publisher

Overall: 5 Stars

Summary:
When Kit Corrigan arrives in New York City, she doesn't have much. She's fled from her family in Providence, Rhode Island, and she's broken off her tempestuous relationship with a boy named Billy, who's enlisted in the army.

The city doesn't exactly welcome her with open arms. She gets a bit part as a chorus girl in a Broadway show, but she knows that's not going to last very long. She needs help--and then it comes, from an unexpected source.

Nate Benedict is Billy's father. He's also a lawyer involved in the mob. He makes Kit a deal--he'll give her an apartment and introduce her to a new crowd. All she has to do is keep him informed about Billy . . . and maybe do him a favor every now and then.

As she did in her National Book Award-winning What I Saw and How I Lied, Judy Blundell traps readers in a web of love, deceit, intrigue, and murder. The result? One stunner of a novel.

My Thoughts:
After enjoying Judy Blundell's What I Saw and How I Lied, I already had a feeling I would enjoy Strings Attached as well... but what I was not expecting was to be blown away! Reading Strings Attached was like taking a step back in time to an era completely unlike our own. Details about the time period- mostly from the late 1940's to 1950 in the fall- are just so effortlessly woven into the story that it was simply difficult to tell fact from fiction! Judy Blundell has written a beautiful, poignant tale of loss, love, hardships, and the meaning of family.

After her brother, Jamie, and boyfriend, Billy, suddenly enlist in the army together, Kit drops out of high school and heads to New York City with no more than a suitcase and a dream to become a star, leaving behind her father and sister back in Providence, Rhode Island. Kit may have talent, but accomplishing her dreams isn't so easy in a city where there are many others trying to make it big as well... and finding only small roles isn't going to be enough forever. So when Billy's father, Nate, finds Kit and offers some help all in exchange for getting back in touch with his estranged son, Kit may be hesitant but it's an offer she can't refuse. However, Kit will soon realize that all deals come with their own strings attached and hers may be more than she ever bargained for...

Kit was a strong, female lead... not afraid to speak her mind but also knowing when it would be more wise to keep her mouth shut. Although she dreamed of making it big, she was never overconfident or smug about her own abilities... she showed humility and an attitude to work hard. I've read a few historical novels where they have arrogant, cocky girls who think they're entitled to everything, so Kit was simply a breath of fresh air. She's mature beyond her seventeen years and this is really showcased well in the way she narrates the novel. In some ways, she did show the naivety that would more suit her age, but in time, she came to realize she was only a pawn in Nate's game of deceit. As Kit becomes more trapped, you'll feel helpless watching on the sidelines.

I loved the flashbacks to Kit's childhood. It may have sometimes slowed the story down at times, but everything is well-intentioned. It's in the past that we learn more about Kit's tumultuous, and often complicated, relationship with Billy despite their obvious love for each other, and it's in the past that we see how Kit's tough childhood has influenced her actions in the present. But perhaps more importantly, we also see how Kit's family has an intricate history with Nate Benedict. With its unhurried pacing, the build up to the final events did seem almost rather quiet before you suddenly found yourself reading it, but Judy Blundell cleverly lays out the clues for you to piece everything together.

Strings Attached absolutely broke my heart. Once I finished, reflecting back on the events and everything that Kit had experienced, I began to cry and couldn't find the will to stop. It was like the full force of everything that Judy Blundell had steadily built up to in the course of the novel suddenly crashed down on me. I mourned for a boy haunted by his past and ashamed to call a man his father, and I mourned for the tragic turn of events towards the end of the novel. But most of all, I mourned for a teenage girl who's only wish was to shine on the stage and be loved... yet only finding herself caught in a web of lies instead.

Strings Attached certainly sets a standard for YA historical fiction that I'm now going to find difficult to top. Wonderfully detailed and absolutely well-written, it will appeal to both teens and adults alike. There's still an ache in my chest when I think about the novel because that's just how emotionally invested I became with this story.

Thanks so much to Scholastic Canada for sending me this copy!

Full of romance, mystery, and danger, the highly anticipated sequel to Jessica’s Guide to Dating on the Dark Side shows that sometimes a princess has to earn her “happily ever after” – with a sharpened stake in hand.
I loved Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side, first attracted to its beautiful cover, and once again, I've fallen in love with this cover too! I love love LOVE the deep purple... and the way Lucius is holding Jessica as she gazes up at him. I simply can't tear my eyes away from all the prettiness!

You may have noticed the release date... The novel doesn't come out until January 2012 which is so far away and by that time, we'll have been waiting for the sequel for just over two years. That's quite awhile my friends... but I'm just glad there's going to be a sequel at all!

Have you read Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side? Have you fallen for this cover too?

Spotted! Cover of Possess by Gretchen McNeil

Gretchen McNeil revealed the cover of her debut YA horror/paranormal novel Possess on her blog shortly after midnight today!

Release Date: August 23, 2011
Publisher: Balzer + Bray

Summary (from Goodreads):
Fifteen-year-old Bridget Liu just wants to be left alone: by her overprotective mom, by the hunky son of the police officer who got her father killed, and by the eerie voices which she can suddenly and inexplicably hear. Turns out the voices are demons--the Biblical kind, not the Buffy kind--and Bridget possesses the rare ability to banish them.

San Francisco's senior exorcist and his newly assigned partner from the Vatican enlist Bridget's help with increasingly bizarre and dangerous cases of demonic possession. But when one of Bridget's oldest friends turns up dead in a ritualistic sacrifice that mirrors her father's murder, Bridget realizes she can't trust anyone. An interview with her father's murderer reveals a link between Bridget and the Emim: a race of part-demons intent on raising their forefathers to the earth in human form. Now Bridget must unlock the secret to the Emim's plan before someone else close to her winds up dead, or worse--the human vessel for a Demon King.

Isn't this cover just absolutely beautiful? If you saw it on a shelf, there's just no way it wouldn't catching your eye! I love the dark tones and the sort of ethereal blue that make up the girl. As for the plot description... wow, it seems so original and completely different from many paranormal novels! Exorcists and demons... sounds kind of scary! I'll definitely be keeping an eye on Possess!

Love, Inc. by Yvonne Collins and Sandy Rideout

Title: Love, Inc.
Authors: Yvonne Collins and Sandy Rideout
Release Date: January 11, 2011 (hardcover)
Publisher: Hyperion
Pages: 416
Source: Copy Won from Authors/Goodreads First Reads

Overall: 4 Stars

Summary:
Zahra, Kali, and Syd would never have met if their parents' marriages hadn't  fallen apart. But when the three girls collide in group counseling, they discover they have something else in common: they've each been triple-timed by the same nefarious charmer, Eric, aka Rico, aka Rick. Talk about eye-opening therapy.

Cheerful, diplomatic Zahra is devastated. Rico had been her rock and sole confidant. How could she have missed the signs? Folksy, flirtatious Kali feels almost as bad. She and Rick had only been on a few dates, but they'd felt so promising. Hardened vintage-vixen Syd is beyond tears. She and Eric had real history... Or so she'd thought. Now all three girls have one mission: to show that cheater the folly of his ways.

Project Payback is such a success, the girls soon have clients lining up for their consulting services. Is your boyfriend acting shady? Dying to know if your crush is into you? Need match-making expertise? Look no further than Love, Inc.

My Thoughts:
I've been really looking forward to reading Love, Inc. ever since I first heard about it and after loving Girl v. Boy, Sandy and Yvonne's previous collaboration together, I just knew I would enjoy this novel... and I was so right. And don't let the light, happy cover fool you because there is definitely more to this novel than meets the eye!

When Zahra, Kalie, and Syd first meet in group counseling, sent there to help deal with their parent's failed marriages, they don't expect to have anything in common... and least of all, not the same boyfriend. Angry and out for a little bit of revenge, the three girls band together to serve some justice to the boy who broke their hearts. So when Project Payback is a mission success, the girls think that's that and will attempt to move on... but word travels fast and soon the girls have clients in need of some relationship help. Reconnaissance, mediation, revenge and even match-making... these girls will do it all, for a certain fair price of course.

Zahra, Kali and Syd have such different personalities yet their friendship is completely palpable. It was wonderful to see their friendship bloom over the course of the novel from complete strangers to a close knit of friends who were just like family. Kali's fun and flirty, and although seeing her mother's many divorces have stopped her from having a true relationship with someone, she's always the hopeful, bubbly one. Syd is more of the tough girl, but behind this facade, she's lonely and throws herself into art with passion while also caring for her dog Banksy. And then there's Zahra with her dreams of one day becoming a celebrity pastry chef ... and she's sort of the middle ground between them all.

The story is told solely from Zahra's point of view and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Compared to Kali and Syd, she sort of thinks of herself as just an average girl even though she's anything but; she's struggling with her own identity and heritage as she deals with a broken heart. She believes that a great deal of why her parents separated were their two completely different cultures; her father's Scottish background and her mother's Pakistani one. And with her mother's parents visiting from Pakistan and staying at their home, she feels this is the case more than ever. She feels torn between two worlds and is unsure how to stick true to herself without disappointing anyone. Watching as Zahra slowly comes to accept herself was just another aspect I thoroughly enjoyed about this novel!

Moving on to something lighter... there is some pretty awesome relationship advice given in this novel! Kali, Syd, and Zahra may have had their own problems with love but they're sure good at giving advice to others. And I must of course mention Brody... his steady bantering with Zahra was a source of constant amusement for me! He also offered some useful and insightful advice to the girls as well, proving he was much more than just a pretty face.

Love, Inc. goes beyond being just a light read. It may be humourous with plenty of laugh out loud moments, but it's also a novel about the tribulations of love and family... and how friendships can arise from the most unexpected circumstances. It really does have a bit of everything!

Fishtailing by Wendy Phillips

Title: Fishtailing
Author: Wendy Phillips
Release Date: February 14, 2010 (trade paperback)
Publisher: Coteau Books
Pages: 200
Source: Borrowed from Library

Overall: 3 Stars

Summary:
Teen violence, bullying and the burning quest to fit in are presented in the poems of four unforgettable high school students: Natalie, Kyle, Tricia, Miguel. Their stories unfold in this explosive new book told in free verse. A story of teen angst like no other, it is based on fictional characters but is rooted in the realities of the teen experience.

When Natalie moves to a new high school she befriends three unwitting victims into her spider-web of manipulations, lies and deceit. Through the poetry and assignments of an English class we glimpse the world of the four teens. Natalie, whose alcoholic parents, years of neglect and ultimate rape by her father's friend has shaped her into a cruel and manipulative teen; Tricia, dealing with her blended family, is drawn into Natalies' forbidden world of partying and rebellion; Kyle, a would-be musician is in love with Tricia and Miguel who lusts for Natalie while hiding the secrets of his family.

The story weaves us through their poetry, their lives and culminates at a party where the four lives fishtail out of control. English class will never be the same.

My Thoughts:
So I kind of wished I had read the plot description before I began reading this novel. I mean, I did read the one on the back of the novel, but it's in a lot less detail so as soon as I began reading, I had no idea what was really going on since I knew next to nothing about the characters except their names and that they attended high school. That's not exactly much to go on and for me, whenever I start reading a book, I like to have some sort of basis for what I'm getting myself into... but nonetheless, I did finally learn more about the character's backgrounds as I read and everything became so much clearer!

Fishtailing is definitely a novel I would consider a bit out of my element. Told completely in free verse, it centers around the lives of four teenagers- Natalie, Tricia, Kyle, and Miguel- and how their lives intersect, beginning with how they share an English class together. Depressed Tricia is torn by her mixed heritage and finds herself drawn into Natalie's dark world as she becomes closer friends with the new girl. The always quiet Miguel harbours a dark secret from his past but find himself attracted to Natalie. And then the most normal of the bunch, Kyle, has a major crush on Tricia but finds himself at odds about his future and following his dreams to become a musician.

It only took me just over an hour to read Fishtailing, but I was surprised by how dark the novel turned out to be. In so few words, Wendy Phillips writes a gritty tale of four teens struggling to deal with life and their circumstances. To put it mildly, they're very troubled but no one is there to really help them. I'll only exclude Kyle because I saw him rather as a beacon of hope... and honestly, if it weren't for him lightening up the moments with his strong feelings for Tricia, it could have been an outright depressing read.  The adults, particularly their English teacher, just have no idea how these teens are really feeling.

It was rather difficult for me to think of how to rate the novel since the way it's written is different than what I'm used to, so it's not like I have something to compare it by to other novels told in free verse style, but I think three stars is still the safe bet since I did find myself liking it.

If you think you're up for a quick read that takes you out of your reading comfort zone, I think Fishtailing will be right up your alley. Once you get into the style of writing, you won't set the book down, transfixed by this hard-hitting tale set in Western Canada that Wendy Phillips seems to effortlessly weave.

*Fishtailing is nominated for the 2011 White Pine Award and and is the 2010 recipient of the Governor General's Literary Award for Children's Literature, English text.*

Spotted! Cover of Supernaturally by Kiersten White

Kiersten White revealed the cover for Supernaturally, the second novel in her Paranormalcy series, this morning on her blog!

Release Date: September 2011 July 26, 2011
Publisher: HarperTeen
Summary (from Goodreads):
Life's never fair when faeries are involved.
The sequel to Paranormalcy.
There isn't a more detailed plot description to be found yet *sad face* but I absolutely can't wait to get my hands on Supernaturally!! The first novel, Paranormalcy, was one of my favourite novels of 2010 (plus had one of my favourite covers), so I'll have some high expectations for this one.

Isn't the cover gorgeous? I love how they've kept up a similar concept to this first one but changed up the colours to something that's fiery yet still dark and edgy!
If you haven't read Paranormalcy yet, you can read my gushing review here

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Title: Unearthly (Unearthly #1)
Author: Cynthia Hand
Release Date: January 4, 2011(hardcover)
Publisher: HarperTeen
Pages: 438
Source: Bought

Overall: 4 Stars

Summary:
In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees...

Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

My Thoughts:
Unearthly is a promising start to a brand new trilogy centering around angels by debut author Cynthia Hand. Rich in beautiful descriptions of the setting, it's also a tale of learning your identity when being a teen is already tough enough. Its moderate pacing helps move the story along in a way that once events begin to slow down, another direction is taken to build up interest once again. In this way, although I found the book to sometimes be slow, I was never actually bored...

Clara Gardner has only recently learned that she's part angel, and with this knowledge comes the fact that one day she'll have to fulfill her purpose. So when Clara begins seeing visions of a boy in a clearing before a great forest fire, her mother immediately packs up the family from California to move to Wyoming, where these visions have been occurring. Clara doesn't quite understand what the visions are entirely saying, but as soon as she sets eyes on Christian, a popular boy at her new school, she knows he's the one. Determined to fulfill her purpose, she tries to become closer to him, intent on protecting him from the danger he'll surely be in soon... but there's a problem. There's another boy, Tucker, and Clara might just be finding herself falling for him...

Clara is a very easily likable main character. She may have angel blood running through her veins, but her emotions are still very much human and this makes it so easy to try and relate with her. She has her doubts about what being a Quartarius (quarter blood) and everything this entails. Her mother is loathe to really tell her too much about world of angels... so just like readers, Clara is very much in the dark about her heritage. What she knows, we know. It was rather frustrating at times because you're asking so many questions but you're getting only a few answers in turn. Even after finishing the novel, which surprisingly offered some twists, you're still left feeling a little unsure about what's really going on. It's like Clara is living in a bubble but cracks are slowly starting to appear as she raises more questions about her angel heritage and the unknown dangers she knew nothing about. I'm hoping we find out more information in the second novel Hallowed!

As the description implies, there is a love triangle... but it was a rather sweet one instead of all riddled with major teen angst. The two boys aren't exactly competing at the same time for Clara's affections or anything (at least in this book, it could happen in the next one...), but are instead each sort of given their time to shine. There's the beautiful Christian, the only boy Clara should be liking considering he's part of her destiny and all... and then there's the funny and kindhearted Tucker, who Clara begins to develop feelings for even though she really shouldn't. I still can't decide which boy to support! As soon as I began to lean toward one boy, the other would do something to convince me otherwise. I'm going to sit on the fence for this one for now.

I know there are individuals who have been disappointed with some of the YA novels featuring angels, myself included at times, but Unearthly is worth the read and definitely gives you hope for more well-written angel stories!

Waiting on Wednesday (33) - The Goddess Test by Aimée Carter

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Release Date: April 19, 2011

Summary:
It's always been just Kate and her mom--and now her mother is dying. Her last wish? To move back to her childhood home. So Kate's going to start at a new school with no friends, no other family and the fear her mother won't live past the fall.

Then she meets Henry. Dark. Tortured. And mesmerizing. He claims to be Hades, god of the Underworld--and if she accepts his bargain, he'll keep her mother alive while Kate tries to pass seven tests.

Kate is sure he's crazy--until she sees him bring a girl back from the dead. Now saving her mother seems crazily possible. If she succeeds, she'll become Henry's future bride, and a goddess.

If she fails...
I absolutely can't wait for The Goddess Test! A pretty cover and a plot description that sounds so awesome... yes, please! I'm sensing that this novel will be the first in a new rise of YA novels with spins on Greek myths... something I'm not complaining about at all! I'll definitely be looking forward to reading Aimée Carter's take on Hades and the Underworld with her debut novel.

Book Trailer! - Strings Attached by Judy Blundell

I came across the book trailer for Judy Blundell's upcoming release Strings Attached this afternoon from a RT by @ThisIsPoint! I couldn't find the book trailer on YouTube yet, so this is the one from Scholastic's website where they have a Trade Video Player to watch book trailers, author interviews and such. (Once the trailer shows up on Scholastic's YouTube channel, I'll probably switch it...)

Release Date: March 1, 2011
Publisher: Scholastic Press

Summary (from Chapters/Indigo):
Kit Corrigan has always dreamed of being a star. But in order to get there, she needs to break up with Billy, who's going to Korea, and leave her family in Providence, Rhode Island, to move to New York City. There, she finds small roles and a city that's tough to live in. After she meets with Billy's father, Nate, things get a little easier. But Nate is a lawyer who defends mobsters, and soon Kit realizes that she has to do what he asks of her. Kit's life starts to feel beyond her control, especially once she uncovers a mystery that she needs to solve in order to protect the people she loves. As she did in her National Book Award-winning What I Saw and How I Lied, Judy Blundell traps readers in a web of deceit, intrigue, and profound moral questions. The result? One stunner of a novel.

The book trailer is pretty great, don't you think? I love how the narrator gives you just enough backdrop info so you're left wondering what's going to happen to Kit. And the music captures the era so nicely... it definitely feels like you're stepping back in time!

Are you looking forward to Judy Blundell's Strings Attached

My Thoughts:
Rhymes with Cupid is a charming debut novel by Canadian author Anna Humphrey! It's a fun, quick read complete with moments that will make you "Awww..." and giggle because it's just too cute! Yes, it's predictable... but what would you expect? It's the path that will finally lead to the two characters being together that's the most amusing part.

Elyse Phillips didn't used to hate Valentine's Day, but after a horrible break-up last year, she's sworn off the idea of ever dating a guy again and just can't wait for the horrible day to finally pass. And working at Goodman's Gifts & Stationary during one of their busiest times of the year selling cards with mushy love lines isn't exactly making her any happier. So when her new neighbour Patrick starts showing some interest in Elyse, she immediately tries to derail him to go for her friend and fellow co-worker Dina instead. She just doesn't want to feel the heartbreak all over again. Love happens when you least expect it though... but will Elyse realize what's been right in front of her all along before it's too late?

Patrick is a total sweetheart! Not only does he look after his grandfather, but he's a really funny, caring guy who also offers to teach Elyse how to drive so she can finally get her license. He's a brave soul I tell you... he would actually willingly get in a car with Elyse and let her drive. And then there's Elyse who's stubborn but past experience has told her to keep her defenses up. So while it's obvious to the reader that Patrick is flirting with her, she views it as him just being an annoying nuisance of some sort. It was fun to see Patrick slowly, but surely, break through her armour.

You know exactly what you're getting into while reading Rhymes with Cupid. You don't need all the characters to be extensively developed nor do you need lots of detail. However, despite saying this, Anna Humphrey still manages to cover the different facets of love... from the hopelessly optimistic romantic to love that can come from the unlikeliest of places. It's pure entertainment, plain and simple.

Rhymes with Cupid is a romantic comedy which will not only pass the time quickly, but it's also a most fitting read for Valentine's Day!

Stylish Blogger Award!

So...ummm... apparently some of you think I'm a stylish blogger because over the past month or two, I've received this award eight times! O.o

Thanks so much to these wonderful bloggers for passing the award along to me!! I'd like to thank:  Rachel at Booktastic Reviews, Ashley at Book Labyrinth, Lucy at Moonlight Gleam's Bookshelf, Lucia at iLive, iLaugh, iLove Books, Laura at All of Everything, Ambur at Burning.x.Impossibly.x.Bright, Ezmirelda at -Dreamz of a YA Writer- and Jay at Books, and other things....Receiving the award from all you put a smile on my face and totally brightened my day!

These are the rules:
1) Thank and link back to the person who awarded you this award.
2) Share 7 things about yourself.
3) Give this award to 15 bloggers.
4) Contact these bloggers and let them know about the award.

These are my 7 things:

1) I love listening to K-pop, but you'll also find lots of English, J-pop, C-pop, and even a couple Thai songs on my iTunes too.

2) I'm a Star Wars nerd. I used to read a ton of Star Wars books and watch the movies over and over again (the newer ones... not the original). I also have Star Wars postcards, a few lightsaber key chains that light up, stuffed toy versions of an Ewok (it's so cute!) and Mickey Mouse as a Jedi, and old computer games. Let's just say I knew more about Star Wars than a lot of the boys in my class... lol.

3) In grade 6, I wrote my very first "novel" for my English class as my teacher decided that some of us could write our own books instead of completing boring textbook questions and spelling tests. You noticed the quotations, eh? If my memory serves me right, it was under 10, 000 words and a cross between Mutant X and Harry Potter (the two other things besides Star Wars that I totally geeked out on then too...). There was also a sudden discovery that the MC was a princess. Yeah, so it wasn't exactly a really good story... but I laugh fondly whenever I remember it.

4) I love watching the trailers before a movie starts at the theaters. Since I'm also an avid moviegoer, I find if sort of fun to guess what movie a trailer will be for...

5) I really don't have that much time to watch T.V anymore because of school but I love watching The Big Bang Theory since it's always on when I'm eating dinner. I'm so behind in The Vampire Diaries episodes right now that I'll have to wait until school's over before finally catching up on season two.

6) I can't settle on only one radio station. I always flick between stations after songs are done!

7) I love Ketchup chips! (But All Dressed and Salt & Vinegar are just as good too!)

I'm now passing the Stylish Blogger Award to...

1. Jen / Literature for Lunch
2. Kay-c, Lynossa, Mithee / Deranged Book Lovers
3. Erika / Moonlight Book Reviews
4. Nicole / Good Books, Good Coffee, Good Life
5. Aislynn / Knit, Purl, Stitch... Read and Cook!
6. Cathy / The Crazy Bookworm
7. J-9 / Blood Rose Books
8. Keyona / Only Sexy Books Allowed
9. Justine / A Bookful of Thoughts
10. Alex / A Girl, Books and Other Things
11. Andrea and Tevya / Reading Lark
12. Em / Super Reader Girl's Book Reviews
13. Selena / The Enchanted Book
14. Chrystal / Snowdrop Dreams of Books
15. Ashley and Christie / A & C Book Junkies

Thanks once again for the award Rachel, Ashley, Lucy, Lucia, Laura, Ambur, Ezmirelda, and Jay! I'm so very flattered!! ^_^
