Fall For Anything by Courtney Summers

Title: Fall For Anything
Author: Courtney Summers
Release Date: December 21, 2010 (trade paperback)
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin
Pages: 224
Source: Bought

Overall: 4.5 Stars

Summary:
From the author of Cracked Up to Be and Some Girls Are comes a gripping story about one girl’s search for clues into the mysterious death of her father.

When Eddie Reeves’s father commits suicide her life is consumed by the nagging question of why? Why when he was a legendary photographer and a brilliant teacher? Why when he seemed to find inspiration in everything he saw? And, most important, why when he had a daughter who loved him more than anyone else in the world? When she meets Culler Evans, a former student of her father’s and a photographer himself, an instant and dangerous attraction begins. Culler seems to know more about her father than she does and could possibly hold the key to the mystery surrounding his death. But Eddie’s vulnerability has weakened her and Culler Evans is getting too close. Her need for the truth keeps her hanging on...but are some questions better left unanswered?

My Thoughts:
You can really do no wrong with reading a novel by Courtney Summers. I’ve loved her first two novels, and once again, I’ve fallen in love with her latest novel, Fall for Anything. It’s a novel completely unlike her first two, yet it still retains her certain style of writing that never hesitates to show just how messed up the world – and people – can be. It’s a dark, somber contemporary novel that will play with your emotions and deals with the subject of grief in a way that I’ve never come across before.

After the recent suicide of her legendary photographer father, Eddie Reeves has only one question on her mind, “Why?” Learning the truth is the only thing she can think about and the possibility of finding an answer is the sole reason she can find the strength to even carry on. Her mother is completely grief-stricken and though Eddie’s best friend Milo is doing his best to be there for her, Eddie’s lost in her own world… thinking about the night her father ended his life and if she could have done something more to help him. Then one night, Eddie meets Culler Evans, her father’s former student, and he may be the only person able to help her. But will it be worth it to find the answer that she seeks?

Once again, Courtney Summers has created a well-developed cast of characters that continuously drive the novel forward. Eddie’s loss and grief felt so real… her pain was like your pain. It was heartbreaking to watch her struggle to search for some sort of meaning in her father's death as she hoped to find a sense of closure, but I smiled when Eddie brought out her sarcastic sense of humour that you’ll recognize from Courtney Summers’ previous novels. Oh Milo, we need to see more guys like you around. Their friendship hasn’t been the same since Eddie’s father died, but he would always have her back.

And then there’s Culler… whose sudden appearance and the knowledge he brings completely throw Eddie for a loop. There’s something comforting about Culler to Eddie because she’s found another grieving soul… someone who recognizes her pain and feels the same way. But as she becomes closer to him, the more she pushes Milo away. As soon as Culler was introduced, I couldn’t shake this wary feeling I had of him. Eddie is at her most vulnerable moment yet we don’t know too much about Culler… so I always kept my guard up whenever he appeared, even if it did really seem he had the best of intentions.

It’s just another element I love about Courtney’s writing! I can never completely predict what’s going to happen in her novels. Will she put her characters through the ringer or throw them a bone? I’m always left on edge wondering what will occur next! When I first finished the novel, I didn’t think the ending was completely satisfying but after thinking about it for awhile… I don’t think I would have wanted it any other way.

Courtney Summers has quickly fast-tracked her way to becoming one of my favourite contemporary authors, writing flawed characters whose magnetic personalities refuse to let you go until their stories are heard. You’ll be definitely falling for Fall for Anything and I’m already highly anticipating Courtney’s next novel.

**You can also read a bonus short story which Courtney Summers wrote called Awake told from Milo's perspective. It's spoiler-free and takes place before the events in Fall for Anything. If you're interested in reading it, just click here.**

Waiting on Wednesday (26) - Love, Inc. by Yvonne Collins and Sandy Rideout

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Publisher: Hyperion
Release Date: January 11, 2011

Summary:
Zahra, Kali, and Syd would never have met if their parents' marriages hadn't  fallen apart. But when the three girls collide in group counseling, they discover they have something else in common: they've each been triple-timed by the same nefarious charmer, Eric, aka Rico, aka Rick. Talk about eye-opening therapy.

Cheerful, diplomatic Zahra is devastated. Rico had been her rock and sole confidant. How could she have missed the signs? Folksy, flirtatious Kali feels almost as bad. She and Rick had only been on a few dates, but they'd felt so promising. Hardened vintage-vixen Syd is beyond tears. She and Eric had real history... Or so she'd thought. Now all three girls have one mission: to show that cheater the folly of his ways.

Project Payback is such a success, the girls soon have clients lining up for their consulting services. Is your boyfriend acting shady? Dying to know if your crush is into you? Need match-making expertise? Look no further than Love, Inc.

Three girls out for a bit of revenge against a boy who played them and then later becoming relationship consultants? Sounds like fun! I'm curious to see just what Project Payback entails and I'm not so secretly hoping they find a bit of new romance for themselves- hopefully with boys who will treat them better.

I really enjoyed Yvonne Collins and Sandy Rideout's novel Girl v. Boy, so I'm hoping I'll really enjoy this one too... it's been a long wait for their latest novel released together!

The two Canadian authors also recently launched a website for Love, Inc. so if you have a moment, check it out here to learn more details about the book, characters, and the authors. There's even a fortune teller game where the character's give out advice!

In My Mailbox (18)

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren where we share any new books or goodies we bought, received, borrowed, etc. during the week.

This is more like a Christmas edition of IMM! This is what I got...

Gift/Bought:
  • A Blue So Dark by Holly Schindler
  • My Soul to Steal (Soul Screamers #4) by Rachel Vincent
  • Rhymes with Cupid by Anna Humphrey
  • Vixen (Flappers #1) by Jillian Larkin
Borrowed from Library:
  • Fishtailing by Wendy Philips
  • The Second Trial by Rosemarie Boll
I usually buy my Christmas gift books with my Mom and then she wraps it up to be opened later, lol. I've started Rhymes With Cupid and so far it's a cute read revolving around the approaching dreaded day for some, Valentine's Day. And my last WoW pick was Playing Hurt by Holly Schindler, so after hearing some great things about her debut novel A Blue So Dark, I knew I had to read it! I'm hoping Vixen is good too... I've heard some mixed comments though... And I love Rachel Vincent's Soul Screamers series, so it was a no-brainer to pick up her latest release. I read it yesterday and it was so good! I can't for the next one!

My sister's in the White Pine reading group at her school, so she borrowed the two books from her high school library... I've been reading the White Pine nominees for the past few years (this will be my fifth), and it's a great way to try out novels by Canadian authors I may not have heard about otherwise. In case you're interested, these are the 2011 White Pine nominees from a post I did awhile ago. I'll be adding the nominees to my Challenge page soon so I can keep track of my progress!

What about YOU guys? What Christmas loot did you receive?

Happy Reading!!

How Not To Be Popular by Jennifer Ziegler

Title: How Not To Be Popular
Author: Jennifer Ziegler
Release Date: March 9, 2010 (paperback, first published January 8, 2008)
Publisher: Delacorte Press
Pages: 339
Source: Borrowed From Library

Overall: 4 Stars

Summary:
Maggie Dempsey is tired of moving all over the country. Her parents are second-generation hippies who uproot her every year or so to move to a new city. When Maggie was younger, she thought it was fun and adventurous. Now that she's a teenager, she hates it. When she moved after her freshman year, she left behind good friends, a great school, and a real feeling of belonging. When she moved her sophomore year, she left behind a boyfriend, too. Now that they've moved to Austin, she knows better. She's not going to make friends. She's not going to fit in. Anything to prevent her from liking this new place and them from liking her. Only . . . things don't go exactly as planned.

My Thoughts:
How Not To Be Popular is pure, fun entertainment filled with plenty of laugh out-loud moments and a storyline that will endear protagonist Maggie to readers on the spot. When I was midway through and had to stop to continue later, I kept thinking back to the novel and a smile would break out on my face as I remembered a particular scene. Seriously, this novel should come with a warning sign on it that says, "Beware: This novel will make you randomly smile and laugh when you're not reading it."

Seventeen year-old Maggie Dempsey is sick of moving all over the country with her free-spirited hippie parents, Les and Rosie. It was fun when she was younger, but now she doesn't want to say goodbye anymore, especially since this time she's leaving behind a best friend and boyfriend. So when her family moves to Austin, Texas, Maggie creates a plan to stop herself from becoming attached to those who will only hurt her when she has to move away once again. Her plan? Becoming unpopular and acting as weird as possible so no one will dare like a loser like her and try to be friends. The only thing is... she didn't expect the plan to backfire.

How Not To Be Popular had me laughing so hard at some points, I had to momentarily put the book down until I could continue reading it again once I got a hold of myself. It's been awhile since a novel has made me done that! I mean, in most novels, when kids move to new schools, they often try to join the popular cliques that dominate the school but here we have the exact opposite!

Maggie is hilarious! She may be seventeen, but the way she acts and thinks sometimes would beg to differ. A lot of her plan does revolve around wearing some pretty crazy outfits that would make her stick out like a sore thumb and bringing out her geekier side... and despite her best efforts, she begins to become friends with people she would never have even given a second look before. It was heartwarming to see her look beyond appearances. As for her parents, they were adorable, loving and sometime even outrageous, but at the same time, oh my goodness, they could be so embarrassing! It only cued another bout of laughter.

While the novel does provide a lot of comic relief, at the heart of the story we have a girl who's afraid to put herself out there for others anymore and just doesn't want to get hurt again. And Maggie's going to learn that friends can be even the most unlikely of people that she never once expected. If you're looking for a funny, laugh-out-read that will pass the time with a smile, I would definitely recommend How Not To Be Popular!

Book Blogger Hop + Follow Friday (12)

Follow Friday and Book Blogger Hop are weekly events hosted by Rachel at Parajunkee and Jennifer at Crazy-for-Books respectively.

Book Blogger Hop is on break until January 7, so no question to answer this week!

This week's FF question is: What are your plans for Christmas Day?

On Christmas Day, I'll be opening presents with my family and once that's finished, probably relaxing reading a new book until it's time to head to my relatives on my Dad's side. We'll do a short second round of opening presents and then we'll probably all watch a few DVD's together until it's time for dinner. My aunt usually cooks up a storm so I'm sure there will be lots of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, etc. for us to eat. I'm really hoping she bakes a chocolate pie for dessert because it's always so yummy! That's probably it for us. Low-key and nothing too crazy except one of their dogs probably eying our food and trying to steal a taste. ^.~

What about you guys? Anything really special planned for the day?

I'm hoping everyone has a safe and wonderful Christmas with their families!!

Well, I'm off to do some blog hopping! *hops away*

2011 Debut Author Challenge Hosted by The Story Siren

YA blogger extraordinaire Kristi, The Story Siren, is hosting the 3rd annual Debut Author Challenge! I'm signing up for the very first time and seeing as I love trying out new novels by debut authors, I think this will be the perfect challenge!

The goal is to read at least 12 novels by debut YA or MG authors, with the challenge running from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2011. While 12 is the minimum, there is no maximum number of novels to be read!

This is my tentative list of debut novels that I'm going to read next year:

1) Across The Universe by Beth Revis
2) Unearthly by Cynthia Hand
3) Choker by Elizabeth Woods
4) Vesper (Deviants #1) by Jeff Sampson
5) Timeless by Alexandra Monir
6) Here Lies Bridget by Paige Harbison
7) The Demon Trapper's Daughter (Demon Trapper's #1) by Jana Oliver

9) Where I Belong by Gwendolyn Heasley
10) Angelfire (Angelfire #1) by Courtney Allison Moulton
11) Haven by Kristi Cook
12) Clarity by Kim Harrington
13) Wither by Lauren DeStefano
14) Born at Midnight (Shadow Falls #1) by C.C. Hunter
15) Saving June by Hannah Harrington
16) The Goddess Test by Aimee Carter
17) Blood Magic (Blood Magic #1) by Tessa Gratton
18) Divergent by Veronica Roth
19) But I Love Him by Amanda Grace (pseudonym of Mandy Hubbard)
20) Die For Me (Revenants #1) by Amy Plum

23) Ashes, Ashes by Jo Treggiari
24) Forgotten by Cat Patrick
25) Sirenz by Charlotte Bennardo and Natalie Zaman
26) Bad Taste in Boys by Carrie Harris

This list is by no means complete and takes me only to July, so I'll be adding more to the list in the future for sure! I'll probably create a new page on the blog to keep track of my progress on the challenge too...

There are so many 2011 debut author books that sound great! I can't wait to get my hands on them and start reading!!

Waiting on Wednesday (25) - Playing Hurt by Holly Schindler

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Publisher: Flux
Release Date: March 8, 2011

Summary:
Star basketball player Chelsea "Nitro" Keyes had a full ride to college—and everyone's admiration back home. Then she took a horrible fall during senior year. Now a metal plate holds her together and she feels like a stranger in her own family.

That summer, Chelsea's dad hires Clint, a nineteen-year-old ex-hockey player and "boot camp" trainer, to work with her at a northern Minnesota lake resort. As they grow close, Chelsea finds that Clint's haunted by his own tragedy. Will their romance end up hurting them all over again—or finally heal their heartbreak?

My heart is already breaking for Chelsea and this is from reading the description alone! Playing Hurt sounds like it will be an emotional, contemporary read filled with self discoveries after losing the ability to play something you love with your heart and overcoming the pain to move on. Add in some romance that complicates these feelings and we have one novel that I absolutely can't wait to read!

Cover Comments: It's so pretty! I like how it's so light and soft on the eyes, instantly capturing that summer feeling while also giving me hope that Chelsea and Clint will both find a way to heal and help each other.

Book Trailer! - My Soul to Steal by Rachel Vincent

Rachel Vincent revealed the book trailer for My Soul to Steal, the fourth novel in her Soul Screamers series, yesterday on her blog!

Release Date: January 1, 2011
Publisher: Harlequin Teen

Summary (from Chapters/Indigo):
**May contain slight spoilers if you have not read the third, previous novel My Soul to Keep.**
Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can't just pretend nothing happened. But "complicated" doesn't even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn't just an ordinary girl. She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

This series is just getting better and better, so I just can't wait to see what will happen next in My Soul to Steal! Nash broke my heart in the last novel but I still absolutely adore Tod... so I'm hoping we see lots of him this time around! And Sabine sounds pretty scary to meet...

And I know the official release date says January 1, but the "shelf-date" is actually today (December 21)! So yay! We get to read it a little bit earlier than expected! (I guess we all know what book I'll be buying soon then... lol.)

Book Trailer! - Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

I came across the book trailer for Unearthly by Cynthia Hand today and thought I'd share it with everyone! Unearthly is Cynthia's debut YA novel and is the first in a new trilogy.

Release Date: January 4, 2011
Publisher: HarperTeen

Summary (from Amazon.ca):
In the beginning, there's a boy standing in the trees...

Clara Gardner has recently learned that she's part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn't easy.

Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there's another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara's less angelic side.

As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she'd have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?

Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.

Unearthly sounds really great! I'll admit, the book had fallen a bit under my radar and I kind of forgot it was coming out in January but seeing this book trailer has renewed my interest! Angels and a hopefully well-done love triangle... sounds good to me! Plus, a quick scroll down the reviews on Goodreads for it shows it's mostly receiving positive reviews so that's another good sign that it should be an enjoyable read!

The Worst Thing She Ever Did by Alice Kuipers

Title: The Worst Thing She Ever Did
Author: Alice Kuipers
Release Date: May 10, 2010 (trade paperback)
Publisher: HarperCollins Canada
Pages: 224
Source: Borrowed from Library

Overall: 4.5 Stars

Summary:
All Sophie wants is to forget what happened last summer. But that’s not easy when people keep asking if she’s okay, and her mother locks herself behind closed doors for hours at a time. And now her best friend, Abigail, cares more about parties and boys than hanging out with Sophie.

Lost in memories of the life she once had -- before that terrible day -- Sophie retreats into herself. But it’s only so long before she must confront the tragedy of her past so she can face the future.

My Thoughts:
The Worst Thing She Ever Did really took me by surprise. Based on the plot description alone, I knew I would probably enjoy it, but I had no inkling just how much I would come to enjoy reading the novel. Emotional and absolutely heartbreaking at times, it was a novel that pulled me in from the very first page and I simply couldn’t put it down… finishing the novel in a mere couple of hours.

Sophie was just like any other teen when one awful day in London, a terrible event suddenly rips away her older sister Emily. But Emily was more than just Sophie’s big older sister- she lost her closest confidante, her best friend, and someone she could always count on to be there for her. Struggling in the aftermath with a mother who barely leaves their home anymore, Sophie just wants to forget what happened that day… but the more she tries, the more she fails and Sophie only wishes she could go back in time to when she was happy again.

The novel is written in journal form, but Sophie narrates in a way that easily allows you to feel her grief and how normalcy is just something she doesn’t know anymore. She feels guilt for what happened that day with her sister, and it’s slowly tearing her apart, making her grow distant and draw away from her close childhood friend Abigail who’s unable to relate to what her friend is going through. With the arrival of Canadian student, Rosa-Leigh, who’s just arrived in England with her family, Sophie is introduced to poetry and slowly, we do see the potential for Sophie to heal… but it won’t be an easy road.

As the novel progresses, we steadily learn through Sophie’s memories about Emily and it’s not until near the end that readers learn how she dies… and when I did, tears began to fall and I couldn’t stop crying. Alice Kuipers did a wonderful job building up to the moment, slowly cluing in the readers with little pieces of the puzzle that finally click into place by the end.

The novel also explored the relationship between a mother and daughter grieving for a loved one as life carried on around them… but it also showed that you have to be strong to find the courage to keep moving forward.

The Worst Thing She Ever Did may have left me in tears, but it also left me with an appreciation for someone who I sometimes take for granted… my own sister.

*The Worst Thing She Ever Did is nominated for the 2011 White Pine Award.*

Book Blogger Hop + Follow Friday (11)

Follow Friday and Book Blogger Hop are weekly events hosted by Rachel at Parajunkee and Jennifer at Crazy-for-Books respectively.

This week's FF question is: What did you study in college, or are currently studying and did it lead to your current 9 to 5 or are you doing something totally different?

I'm currently a first-year university student studying life sciences but hoping to take some more English-related courses next year because it's something I'm more interested in. I've never had a job before except for maybe helping out my Dad now and then for his work... I focused on my school work in high school rather than getting one. I've always imagined my first job to be at a book store though!

This week's BBH questions is: What do you consider most important in a story, the characters or the plot?

Ugh! Tough question because I really do think they both go hand in hand! A great plot will engage you, keep you reading, and let the characters grow. They draw out your emotions, terrifying you one moment and leaving you breathless in another. They take on journeys to other worlds which you could never imagine. A book without a great storyline is not worth reading at all. But the same is true for characters! I don't want to read a book where the whole time I hate them and can't stop complaining about their actions. A story needs characters which people can relate and sympathize with so there's common understanding. A book can have an awesome plot but without great characters to support it, I'm not going to read it. You need a balance of both!!

What about you guys?

And wow! I haven't participated in either meme since early October! I'm going to make use of my holiday break and hopefully visit and find some new blogs to follow! If you stop by, please leave your blog link since it makes it easier for me to return a comment and/or follow!

Well, I'm off to do some blog hopping! *hops away*

Beth Revis's debut novel Across The Universe sounds A.W.E.S.O.M.E! A sci-fi dystopian novel with a bit of mystery and a little romance thrown in for good measure... need I say more? As for the cover- it's so gorgeous!!

Spotted! Cover of City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

Yay!! The cover of City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare, the fourth novel in The Mortal Instruments series, was revealed this afternoon on Entertainment Weekly's Shelf Life and there's also a short excerpt you can read there too!

You can also check out Cassandra Clare's blog for more details on the cover (and a close-up shot of it!), including the fact that the Second Cycle covers will each be featuring two characters!

Release Date: April 5, 2011
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry

Summary:
Love, blood, betrayal and revenge — the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels. Simon Lewis is having some trouble adjusting to his new life as a vampire, especially now that he hardly sees his best friend Clary, who is caught up in training to be a Shadowhunter—and spending time with her new boyfriend Jace. Not to mention that Simon doesn’t quite know how to handle the pressure of not-quite-dating two girls at once. What’s a daylight-loving vampire to do? Simon decides he needs a break and heads out of the city—only to discover that sinister events are following him. Realizing that the war they thought they’d won might not yet be over, Simon has to call on his Shadowhunter friends to save the day — if they can put their own splintering relationships on hold long enough to rise to the challenge.

What do you guys think? Clary's eyes looked a bit scary at first glance but it's really just because of the bright, green colour they used, and I love how she's wearing the Morgenstern ring around her neck! And Simon looks so cool- like everyone just walks around with arrows on their back everyday!

I can't wait to have this book sitting on my shelf! I hope it has the metallic sheen to it again like the previous covers... it would be so pretty! The book comes out the day after my birthday, so it's going to be an awesome present!

The Oracle of Dating by Allison van Diepen

Title: The Oracle of Dating (The Oracle of Dating #1)
Author: Allison van Diepen
Release Date: May 1, 2010 (paperback)
Publisher: Harlequin Teen
Pages: 256
Source: Bought

Overall: 5 Stars

Summary:
For five bucks, the Oracle of Dating will tell you:
* How to flirt
* If that cute guy you're crushing on likes you, too
* Whether your new romance will last through lunch period
* And much more

What she won't tell you? Who she is.

No one at Kayla's school knows she's the famous Oracle of Dating— the anonymous queen of dating advice. She doesn't even have a boyfriend. Two relationship disasters were enough to make Kayla focus on everyone else's love life.

But then her advice backfires on her own best friend. And Kayla starts to seriously obsess about Jared Stewart—the very cute, very mysterious new guy in school. Suddenly, the teen queen of advice needs her own oracle of dating—and she knows just where to find one….

My Thoughts:
I’ve read all of Allison van Diepen's novels, with the exception of Street Pharm, and so far I’ve enjoyed all of them… with The Oracle of Dating being no exception! Her novels are usually more serious and hard-hitting such as Snitch, which deals with gangs in high schools, but it was great to see Diepen stretch her writing skills and write something so completely different!

Kayla has always been good at giving relationship advice, always offering tips to her older sister and her friends. It's what makes her so successful as the elusive Oracle of Dating. Her own two failed past relationships might have put her off dating in high school, but she can still help those who are in need of a little advice. But when Kayla's advice falls through for her own best friend, she begins to question herself if the Oracle is hurting others more than helping. And it doesn't help that thoughts of a certain hot boy in her art class, Jared Stewart, keep popping in her head.... what's a girl to do?

The Oracle of Dating was a pure joy to read. It’s one of those cute, feel-good novels that will leave you smiling from the very first page until the very end. I was having a bit of a down day when I began reading, and in a heartbeat, my mood was already lightened! Allison van Diepen has created a great cast of likable characters, from the main characters like Kayla and Jared, to the side character's such as Kayla's best friends and her older sister. Kayla is sweet and funny, and although she does make a small amount of income with her Oracle of Dating services, she genuinely cares about helping others.

The chemistry between Kayla and Jared flowed easily off the page, and from the very beginning I was eager to see them finally admit their feelings for each other. Plus, the sarcasm the two shared with each other was just another aspect I loved!

I finished the novel all too quickly and I’m almost nervous to read the second novel The Oracle Rebounds, which is in stores now, because I don’t know how Allison van Diepen can top this one! The Oracle of Dating is a light, easy and entertaining read for anyone looking for a novel that will pass the time with a smile.

In My Mailbox (16)

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren where we share any new books or goodies we bought, received, borrowed, etc. during the week.

This week I got...
Won:
  • The Eyes of a King (The Last Descendants #1) by Catherine Banner
  • Voices in the Dark (The Last Descendants #2) by Catherine Banner
I won both novels from Bookurious in a surprise giveaway! Thank you! I read the plot descriptions and I would fit them under the fantasy genre, which I don't read too often, so it will be nice to read them once I somehow make my way through my TBR pile. There was also a lovely bookmark for Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly and Bookurious included as well!

And I did buy Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead a couple days ago too, but my Mom has hidden it from me so I'm not tempted to read it before I finish my exams. So I'll include it in my next IMM post!

I have one more exam to go and it's on Tuesday, and after that... I'm on break for the holidays! I'm so excited... would you believe me if I said I've only read like 3 YA books this past month?.... It's horrible! I have quite a few books I need to buy (like Matched and Anna and the French Kiss!) and I'm DEFINITELY going to get some reading done during the holidays!

What about YOU guys? Any new reads/finds this week?

Happy Reading!

Personal Demons by Lisa Desrochers

Title: Personal Demons
Author: Lisa Desrochers
Release Date: September 14, 2010
Publisher: Tor Teen
Pages: 368
Source: Bought

Overall: 4 Stars

Summary:
Frannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a bit of a wicked streak. She has spent years keeping everyone at a distance---even her closest friends---and it seems as if her senior year is going to be more of the same... until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can't seem to stay away from him.

What she doesn't know is that Luc is on a mission. He's been sent from Hell itself to claim Frannie's soul. It should be easy---all he has to do is get her to sin, and Luc is as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn't stand a chance. But he has to work fast, because if the infernals are after her, the celestials can't be far behind. And sure enough, it's not long before the angel Gabriel shows up, willing to do anything to keep Luc from getting what he came for. It isn't long before they find themselves fighting for more than just Frannie's soul.

But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay... for all of them.

My Thoughts:
Personal Demons is the first novel in a new trilogy featuring two very hot male leads and one teen girl caught in between as both Heaven and Hell each try to take her for their own. And you know what? I simply couldn't put this book down!

I really enjoyed how the novel was told in alternate points of view between Frannie and Luc- the story just wouldn't have been the same without it! We learn about Frannie's past and why she's so hesitant to open up to others, keeping her friends at arm's length, but we also see the other side of the coin too! Luc may work in Acquisitions for Hell, but we get a chance to see that he's really not quite the bad boy you would expect him to be. Plus, the bonus of being inside his head was that we got to see just how deep his feelings were for Frannie... swoon! Poor Gabe. He didn't stand a chance.

The only thing that really stopped me from falling completely in love with the novel was Frannie. Now, I don't mind love triangles and the one in Personal Demons is certainly a huge aspect in the novel, but I got annoyed with Frannie at times because of her indecisiveness to choose between Luc and Gabe. I won't be too hard on her though because if I were in her shoes, I don't think I would be able to choose either!

And don't get me wrong, I loved seeing the smoldering chemistry from the very beginning between Frannie and the boys, but at the same time, I would have liked to have seen more of a build up to the romance instead of Frannie falling for both boys as soon as she first sets her eyes on them. Frannie could have shown a little more resistance to their charm!

It seems like I only spoke of the romance in the novel, but that's because the love triangle did seem to take more center stage at times. Frannie has a special ability which both Heaven and Hell wish to have, but since it's not revealed right away, it only left me curious and eager to flip the pages to find out! And Luc is feeling awfully conflicted too- does he risk the wrath of the King of Hell who shows no mercy... or does he give in to his growing attraction to Frannie? I kept wondering how everything was going to work out!

Lisa Desrochers has left quite the mark with her impressive debut and I'm most certainly eagerly looking forward to book two, Original Sin, when it's released next July 2011. I can't wait to see what's in store for Frannie, Luc and Gabe next!

Waiting on Wednesday (23) - Sometimes It Happens by Lauren Barnholdt

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine spotlighting upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

Publisher: Simon Pulse
Release Date: July 12, 2011

Summary:
On the last day of her junior year, Hannah's boyfriend Ryan dumped her. Facing a summer of loneliness, Hannah turns to her best friend Ava for comfort. Ava does what BFFs do: she stays by Hannah's side...until it's time for Ava to head up to Maine for the summer. Also left behind is Ava's boyfriend, Noah, who's such a great guy he gets Hannah a job at the diner he waits tables at. Slowly, Hannah comes out of her funk thanks to Noah's good conversation and their fun times at the diner. But things get complicated when their friendship turns into attraction--and one night, into a passionate kiss. The novel opens on the first day of senior year; the day Hannah is going to see Ava, Ryan, and Noah all in one place. Over the course of the day secrets and betrayals are revealed, and alliances are broken and reformed. In the end, everyone is paired up once again, but not the way you might think...

I love reading Lauren Barnholdt's novels so when I heard about her latest YA novel, I just had to make it my WoW pick! I have all four of her previous YA novels, and while my favourite is still Two-Way Street, I've enjoyed them all! And by the sounds of it, I'll be liking Sometimes It Happens for sure as well!

Cover Comments: So pretty! It's soft on the eyes and the colourful font matches it perfectly!

Trash by Andy Mulligan

Title: Trash
Author: Andy Mulligan
Release Date: October 12, 2010 (hardcover)
Publisher: David Fickling Books
Pages: 240
Source: ARC received from publisher through Bookurious

Overall: 3.5 Stars

Summary:
In an unnamed Third World country, in the not-so-distant future, three "dumpsite boys" make a living picking through the mountains of garbage on the outskirts of a large city.

One unlucky-lucky day, Raphael finds something very special and very mysterious. So mysterious that he decides to keep it, even when the city police offer a handsome reward for its return. That decision brings with it terrifying consequences, and soon the dumpsite boys must use all of their cunning and courage to stay ahead of their pursuers. It's up to Raphael, Gardo, and Rat-boys who have no education, no parents, no homes, and no money-to solve the mystery and right a terrible wrong.

Andy Mulligan has written a powerful story about unthinkable poverty-and the kind of hope and determination that can transcend it. With twists and turns, unrelenting action, and deep, raw emotion, Trash is a heart-pounding, breath-holding novel.

My Thoughts:
I began reading Trash not expecting too much because I'll admit, I'd never actually heard of the novel before I received a copy for review... but I was really pleasantly surprised by how good it was! I took my time reading Trash, never exactly feeling the rush to hurriedly complete it, but there were plenty of twists and turns to keep me engaged and coming back for more.

It was just like any other day for fourteen-year old dumpsite boy Raphael Fernandez. A long day trifling through the mounds of garbage outside the city, hoping to make enough money from whatever he found to help support his family among the many that live in the garbage site they call Behala. But one day, Raphael finds along with his best friend Gardo something very unusual- a small bag that contains a map, a wallet filled with money, and a key. Later that evening, policemen arrive searching for the bag and despite the fact they've offered a reward, Raphael and Gardo keep their mouths shut. And it's a decision that will change their fates forever. Also enlisting the help of the fellow dumpsite boy Rat, the three boys will have to work together if they're to stay one step ahead of the police who are trying to stop them while piecing together the mystery of the contents of the bag.

Trash has this fun sort of narrating where it's like the events have already occurred so the characters are kind of telling their sides of the story and giving an account of the events as the novel progresses. It's mainly split between Raphael, Gardo, and Rat, but sometimes it would randomly switch to a minor character for a short period of time. You would think it would be confusing that way, but it really wasn't! In fact, I thought it made the story all the more better because we got to see events from different angles and learn what the characters thought of one another.

The novel is a relatively easy read, but the topics it addresses at times are hardly the case. It's a story of three boys living in poverty in a country with corrupt politicians and police, and their own subsequent rebelling against it in the hopes of a better future for themselves. You'll be rooting for these street-smart boys from the beginning, and admiring their courage and bravery to learn the truth when they could have just as easily given up. So while Trash isn't the type of novel I would usually read, I am most certainly glad I did!

*Trash was also recently named as one of Publishers Weekly's Best Children Books of the Year for Fiction (2010).*

In My Mailbox (15)

In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren where we share any new books or goodies we bought, received, borrowed, etc. during the week.

I missed last week's IMM, so this is what I got last week and this week!

Won via Twitter:
  • Fixing Delilah by Sarah Ockler
Bought:
  • The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney
Received:
  • ARC of The Lost Saint (The Dark Divine #2) by Bree Despain
  • ARC of The Reinvention of Bessica Lefter by Kristen Tracy

A huge thank you goes out to Sarah Ockler for sending me her novel! I can't believe I actually won something! And thank you Bookurious for the wonderful surprise in my mailbox!

I was so glad my order came in for The Mockingbirds the other day! And it just figured that after I ordered it, the novel finally began popping up at stores. The Reinvention of Bessica Lefter is a middle grade novel, which I don't read too much, but I read the plot description and it sounds cute and funny! As for The Lost Saint, I might have to reread The Dark Divine because I forget what happened in the first novel, lol.

What about YOU guys? Any new reads/finds this week?

Happy Reading!
